After a classic pitcher’s duel between San Fran’s Madison Bumgarner and L.A.’s Clayton Kershaw broke in Bumgarner’s favor, these two rivals will do it all again Wednesday night.

But with Zack Greinke (an ace on virtually any other team) taking the bump for the Dodgers, the home team has the clear advantage this time.

Giants starter Vogelsong has had blips of success in his career, but Greinke has been one of the most consistently elite hurlers in MLB over the past several seasons, joining the ranks of teammate Kershaw and Seattle’s Felix Hernandez.

When either of L.A’s top duo takes the hill, the Dodgers (12-8) are an awfully tough beat.

San Francisco’s 2-1 win yesterday was inspiring, with Bumgarner proving he is showing no hangover after his World Series heroics – almost single-handedly putting down Kansas City – last October.

Crucially, the Dodgers’ batsmen should be able to get to Vogelsong and establish a lead for Greinke to work with. Dodger 1B Adrian Gonzalez and 2B Howie Kendrick have remained hot in this series.

How good is Greinke? Against division opponents in the NL West, he is 21-1 with a 1.88 ERA in 31 starts.

(Note: the fact he has only 22 decisions in 31 starts with an ERA so minuscule, certainly doesn’t rave about L.A.’s offense before this season).

Good. Lord.

To make hay, San Fran hitters will have to find a way to get Greinke out of the game. All they can do is try and milk counts and hope for the best, though a pitcher of Greinke’s caliber is adept at putting you in a hole with two strikes, so you must swing defensively.

Yesterday was a big win for the Giants (9-12) in a tough divisional series versus their bitter in-state rival.

For all their lavish payroll, the Dodgers are not a perfect club, especially with Cuban slugger Yasiel Puig out of the lineup. However, with the offseason additions of Kendrick and veteran SS Jimmy Rollins, Los Angeles now has enough offensive components to tread water.

That reality is emphasized when you see Greinke or Kershaw with the ball in their glove.

Vogelsong can always spin a decent performance, in which case runs will definitely be at a premium in this game. It’ll be a real old-school “Senior Circuit” ballgame.

The G-Men needed to not get swept in these past two series against California teams, tonight’s opponent and the upstart San Diego Padres. They managed that, so I suppose that’s something.

4* Free MLB Pick: Los Angeles 4, San Francisco 1

Regardless, it appears that San Francisco is in for a tough climb if it hopes to emerge at the top of the NL West pile in 2015.
