Detroit is looking for a series split before they head to New York for the weekend. Verlander takes the hill looking to show he still has it.

Detroit

The Tigers dropped the game last night as their series shifted to Cincinnati.

The injury list is getting shorter but this group is still without one of its best bats – Victor Martinez – and Miguel Cabrera can’t do it all on his own.

They have won 6 of their last 10 but need to get back on track before heading to the Bronx after this trip to Cincy.

They are only a couple of games over .500 and it definitely looks like the race in the AL Central might be more than a two team fight.

This is just the second start of the season for Justin Verlander. The first was OK. He proved he could get hitters out but there was nothing there that makes you think he is ready to dominate.

The team is good enough that they just need him to have quality starts and that starts with being more economical with his pitches. He only got through 5 innings the last time out and it took 87 tosses.

You might want to watch him a little more before committing.

Cincinnati

The Reds pounded out four runs in the 13th inning to win last night over Detroit as the series shifted to Cincinnati.

The Reds are in a tough spot. They are only five games under but with the Cardinals and the Pirates looking so strong, plus the Cubs, it is hard to imagine they are going to be able to really challenge.

Thus the countdown is on for how much longer Johnny Cueto is going to remain with the club.

This can still be a formidable group on a lof of nights but they are mostly going to be a spoiler.

Other than Cueto it has been difficult to find quality starting pitching for the Reds.

This season Mike Leake has been taking his turn but his effectiveness has waned.

He is averaging a home run allowed per start and has been shelled at home where his ERA is an even 6.00.

His strikeout rate is down this season which is problematic. He is only going to be a spot play this year and I don’t think this is one of them.

MLB Betting Trends:

  • DET are 2-6 in their last 8 games as an underdog.
  • DET are 2-6 in their last 8 road games.
  • Under is 7-3 in DET last 10 interleague games.
  • Over is 7-2 in CIN last 9 home games.
  • Over is 6-2 in CIN last 8 games as a favorite.
  • CIN are 8-20 in their last 28 interleague games.

MLB Betting Prediction:  Detroit -101

I am banking on JV being a little sharper in this one while Leake maintains his performance at home.

MLB Score Prediction:  Detroit 5 – Cincinnati 3

You have to jump on these values with Verlander. If he is right they won’t be around much longer.
