The aging Tigers hope to delay the advance of progress one more day on Wednesday night at home.

Using the “open window” analogy, these two clubs are at opposite points of receiving fresh air.

Detroit’s (31-28) window is closing, surely faster than it would like. The regression of 1B/DH Victor Martinez, a hitter that was an MVP candidate last year, is a clear example of this.

Other important players like star slugger Miguel Cabrera and 3B Nick Castellanos, are sluggish and clumsy on the basepaths. Superstar pitcher Justin Verlander’s best days might also be behind him, and the Tigers no longer have Doug Fister or Max Scherzer on the mound.

The Cubs (30-26), meanwhile, are just starting to enjoy big gulps of that fresh breeze with the window of opportunity only starting to open. Team President Theo Epstein and his brain trust are establishing a sustainable winner on the North Side.

It’s not all there in a tidy package yet – for one, ace Jon Lester is carrying a 4.25 ERA – but the Cubbies are a dangerous team, led by young sluggers like 1B Anthony Rizzo, OF Jorge Soler (though he’s currently on the DL) and 3B stud Kris Bryant.

Shortstop Starlin Castro, long the subject of derision, is also finally playing some solid ball, at least by the antiquated statistics (.269 average, 27 RBI). Baby-faced, 21-year old 2B Addison Russell is also cutting his teeth in the majors.

Sure, the Tigers added speed recently thanks to Blue Jays cast-offs Rajai Davis and Anthony Gose, but this is definitely still a creaky old team playing some interleague action versus the up-and-comers.

Detroit starter Shane Greene’s pitching has been only average this season, so expect that young bat speed to terrorize Greene at Comerica.

In the opposing dugout, Arrieta has been a much better complement to the underwhelming Lester in Chicago’s rotation. His 3.04 ERA and 1.08 WHIP belies his pedestrian win/loss record.

If Lester goes back to pitching like he is capable and Epstein can pull some deadline magic, we could see Chicago in the National League wild-card picture this season.

With the Royals and Twins on the scene to join other talented clubs like Cleveland and the White Sox – who could always wake up – the Tigers seemingly have a trickier road to get there in the AL.

4* MLB Free Pick: Chicago 7, Detroit 3

Overall, Arrieta’s strong pitching, V-Mart’s DL stint (and disappearance as an impactful hitter when healthy) and Greene’s inconsistencies point to a likely road victory for the Cubs, avenging yesterday’s 6-0 loss and halting Detroit’s three-game win streak.
