After wining two of three in Chicago last week, the Washington Nationals will look tp get back on the rails when they open a four-game series starting Wednesday against the visiting Cubs in the nation’s capital.

Looking like a real National League contender to start the season, the Cubs (27-23) have struggled as of late, and are winless in their last four series after losing two of three at Miami earlier this week.

In the meantime, Washington (29-23) was swept in three by the Reds and then lost two more against the Blue Jays, and are currently 1-5 in their last six.

The Nat’s offense has all but totally disappeared, as they managed only six hits in their 8-0 loss to Toronto on Wednesday. Two of those hits coming from Bryce Harper, who has been Washington’s lone bright spot during its slump.

He will look to get his team back on track when the Cubs start right-hander Jake Arrieta in Game 1 tonight. The 29-year-old has no decisions in two starts at Nationals Park, while posting a 1.38 ERA, but is winless in his last three outings. Arrieta is 0-1 with a 5.81 ERA in six career starts against the Nationals.

He will start opposite of the Nat’s Gio Gonzalez, who has won three straight, but posted a no decision in his last outing, allowing four runs over 5 1/3 innings in the Nats loss at Cincinnati.

The 29-year-old 3-1 with a 2.39 ERA in six starts against the Cubs. Gonzalez will need to be sharp as a few Cubs have done fairly well off the right-hander, including Dexter Fowler and Starlin Castro.

Nationals — Both teams have what it takes to rise to the top of the NL race, but have fallen off the charge, making this one hard to predict. When this happens I look for that one solid statistic that I feel gives that one team and me the edge.

Gonzalez is 22-11 with a 2.91 ERA in 47 career games at Nationals Park, so I am going with the home fav in this one.
