Monday night’s match-up in the Rocky Mountains couldn’t feature two more diametrically opposed teams: the model franchise Red Birds coming to Denver to play the sad-sack Rockies.

St. Louis (38-19) finds a way to do it year after year, seemingly by avoiding the splashy signings, but hanging onto dependable players with playoff acumen.

The Rockies (25-30) would do well to take notes from the Cards, as they are the only team in the majors who hasn’t won a home series yet in 2015. Prospects aren’t looking good for breaking that ignominious trend against St. Lou.

The only causation you can draw when one examines why Colorado is so often bad (2006 being an exception) is the high elevation and the inability for most pitchers to compile an ERA below five in the thin air.

Colorado cycles though starting pitchers like Derek Jeter cycles through girlfriends. The first pitcher that can qualify as the staff leader in ERA is Kyle Kendrick, with a ghastly 6.16 mark.

The Rockies will always have players capable of smashing the baseball at Coors, but this sport proves time and again that a good team must have more than just offense to succeed.

Sure, IF D.J. LeMahieu is hitting a ton (.335 average) and the Rockies have a gem in 3B Nolan Arenado, but unless Colorado can pitch somewhat capably in the National League, the Rockies probably don’t stand a chance.

A carbon copy of this model is the Cardinals. The NL Central division-leading squad leans on stable pitching (tonight’s starter Lackey, Michael Wacha, Lance Lynn), a breakout player in 2B Kolten Wong and reliable vets like SS Jhonny Peralta and OF Matt Holliday.

All of St. Louis’s success has been attained with slugging 1B Matt Adams on the disabled list. It’s a model to covet, to be sure.

The home team sit last in the NL West division, but they’ve been playing around .500 ball for the past couple of weeks. The Rockies need to go on a sustained run if they are to get back in the mix by mid-summer.

St. Louis has won six of its last eight games; the Red Birds have been predictably in control, currently sitting 6.5 games up on the second-place Pittsburgh Pirates in the Central division.

Expect the Peraltas and Hollidays of the world to mash in the high elevation this week. Also, expect Colorado’s streak of series-less home performances to continue.
