The Subway series traditionally gets fans excited – who doesn’t enjoy watching or betting on the powerhouse Yankees and Mets? – but it doesn’t have the same steam this season with the Mets struggling as they are. That said – Sunday night should give us plenty of electricity, as both teams send their aces to the hill.

New York Yankees (25-16, 2nd place in AL East)
New York Mets (20-22, 5th place in NL East)

Are the Mets in for another beating? Yankee ace C.C. Sabathia has heated up earlier in the season than he normally does and Johan Santana isn’t quite the dominant force he was a few years back.

C.C. Sabathia (4-2, 3.43)
Johan Santana (3-3, 3.72)

Big C.C. Sabathia has been solid overall in 2010 but his overall numbers mask his road struggles. Away from the Bronx, he’s 2-2 with a 4.58 ERA, only 27 strikeouts in 39.1 innings and six homers allowed. The Mets will have to hope Sabathia’s current road troubles trump his strong track record against them.

In two career starts against the Mets, Sabathia has sparkled. He’s 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA and just one walk over 15 innings. He will, however, have to be careful with Rod Barajas. The Mets backstop really has Sabathia’s number, batting .421 with three homers and five RBI over 19 career at-bats against him.

Before we panic over Johan Santana’s supbar numbers, we should realize that (a) he’s still just 31 years old and (b) his ERA jumped two and a half runs after one brutal start in which the Phillies drilled him for 10 runs in 3.2 innings. Six of his nine outings have been quality starts this season.

Santana does have to battle against the Yankees historically, though. He’s 4-2 against them over eight starts but has a 4.40 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. Several Yankee hitters have him figured out, especially Robinson Cano (.412 hitter against Santana) and Derek Jeter (.423).

Even if Santana has his best stuff going on Sunday night, we have a mismatch here. The Mets offense has been pretty anemic this season. Jason Bay has just one homer through 42 games, David Wright has a shot at the single-season strikeout record and Jose Reyes is fighting to stay above the Mendoza line.

The Mets aren’t equipped to support Santana, especially with C.C. Sabathia staring them down.
