Two teams going in opposite directions clash in Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN this week. The Yankees keep stringing wins together and have finally staked out some breathing room in the American League East ahead of Tampa and Boston. The Dodgers ‘ win on Thursday night snapped a six-game losing streak.

A strong performance against the Bronx Bombers would get them back on track but they could lose crucial ground in the National League West if the Yankees take it to them.

Sunday, June 27, 8:05 p.m. ET

New York Yankees (45-27, 1st place in AL East)
Los Angeles Dodgers (39-33, 3rd place in NL West)

The pitching matchup pits two outstanding lefties against each other. Whereas New York’s lefty is an ageless wonder, Los Angeles’ lefty is enjoying his coming of age this season.

Andy Pettitte (9-2, 2.48)
Clayton Kershaw (7-4, 3.24)

Is it time to start touting Andy Pettitte as a potential AL Cy Young candidate? He’s been remarkably consistent and effective this season, surrendering two earned runs or fewer in 12 of his 14 starts. The big Cajun has been especially strong on the road, going 3-0 with a 1.96 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. Not bad for a guy who mulled retirement this past offseason.

Pettitte has an excellent track record against the Dodgers, going 2-0 with a 3.33 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in four career starts. However, the Dodgers have a couple of wily vets who have absolutely mashed him historically.

The Dodgers may want to roll the dice and give Garret Anderson a start on Sunday night. He’s a .402 career hitter with three homers and 10 RBI in 82 at-bats against Pettitte. And then there’s the ultimate anti-Pettitte device: Manny Ramirez. Manny bats .416 off him lifetime with four homers and 20 RBI in 77 at-bats.

Sure, Anderson and Ramirez’s numbers largely reflect their younger days, but Pettitte is no spring chicken either.

Clayton Kershaw’s talent is undeniable, as evidenced by his 103 strikeouts and just five homers allowed in 91.2 innings this season and .222 career opponents’ average. But some other negative numbers stick out entering Sunday’s start. Kershaw is on pace to walk roughly 100 batters this season; you don’t want to struggle with your command when you face a lineup laden with right-handed power.

Kershaw learned that the hard way in his last outing when he allowed five runs in 6.2 innings against the Angels. Righty bats Howie Kendrick, Kevin Frandsen and bobby Abreu combined for five hits and all five runs off Kershaw that night.

Kershaw could therefore be in for a rough night against Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and switch hitters like Jorge Posada (if he plays) and Mark Teixeira. With Pettitte dealing on the road and showing better command than Kershaw right now, I think he’ll get the run support he needs…even if Manny tags him once or twice.
