The Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox hoped their Sunday-night battle on ESPN would be a battle for the American League Central grown, but the chips have fallen Minnesota’s way. The White Sox are hanging by a thread in the division race and the Tigers are nothing more than spoilers now.

Can they ruin Chicago’s fun on the road this weekend?

Sunday, September 19, 8:05 p.m. ET

Detroit Tigers (72-74, 3rd place in AL Central)
Chicago White Sox (79-67, 2nd place in AL Central)

The pitching matchup pits two former first-round picks against each other.

Jeremy Bonderman (8-9, 5.04)
John Danks (13-11, 3.60)

Jeremy Bonderman is “back” – sort of. Once a blue-chip prospect expected to become a perennial All-Star, he’s nothing more than an innings eater now. But his new role still qualifies as a step up from 2009, when he started just one game.

Bonderman has shown reasonable command this season but his strikeout rate has fallen and he’s been highly ineffective on the road, going 2-5 with a 6.52 ERA. He has, however, handled the White Sox fairly well. He’s 2-1 with a 3.48 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and .203 average allowed against them this season.

Then again, factoring in his road struggles, the same rule applies to Bonderman against Chicago this year. As good as his numbers look, he got rocked for six runs in six innings during his lone trip to U.S. Cellular.

Paul Konerko has enjoyed a nice power surge this year and it could continue against Bonderman. He has five homers and nine RBI in 41 career at-bats versus Bonderman. Pro-rated over a 600 at-bat season, that would put Konerko at a 73-homer, 131-RBI pace. Not too shabby.

John Danks has done a fine job for the White Sox for several seasons now, regularly winning 12-plus games and keeping his ERA under 4.00. But his 2010 season has been a bit uneven. He’s had two months with an ERA of 2.91 or lower, two with an ERA of 4.73 or higher and two somewhere in between. He just hasn’t found his consistency.

Danks has also been more hittable as the season progresses; opponents hit .219 off him before the All-Star break but are batting .260 since then.

He’s done a fine job against the Tigers this season, though. Danks has a 1.38 ERA and no homers allowed over 13 innings against them.

In theory, we should know what to do here, right? Bonderman is brutal on the road and has already gotten rocked at U.S Cellular. Danks has dominated the Detroit Tigers. All the trends suggest we should pick Chicago.

But I’ve led you horribly astray with these supposedly educated picks, going 1-8 over my last nine weeks. I’ll give proper logic one more chance and pick the White Sox but you should strongly consider playing the superstitious card and picking the exact opposite of what I pick.
