Sunday Night Baseball Pick: Texas Rangers vs Minnesota Twins

Teams have begun the 2010 Major League Baseball season. It’s time to NOW bring your best baseball betting hat to the table for gambling on baseball in the 2010 season. Cappers Picks all season long provides MLB baseball gambling predictions, so check back often.

When we think of classic baseball matchups – the kind ESPN eats up for Sunday-night telecasts – The Rangers and Twins don’t usually come to mind. But, fact of the matter is, each of these teams is an American League division leader.

So maybe they’ll treat us to a quality game after all.

Sunday, May 30, 8:05 p.m. ET

Texas Rangers (26-21, 1st place in AL West)
Minnesota Twins (27-20, 1st place in AL Central

Though each of these teams has a solid offense, we’ll see two good (if unpredictable) young pitchers take the mound on Sunday night.

Derek Holland (2-0, 2.95)
Scott Baker (4-4, 4.48)

Has prospect Derek Holland officially arrived? He showed plenty of promise in 2009 but still took his lumps more often than not. As a result, he opened 2010 at Triple-A.

the minor-league stint paid off; Holland hasn’t lost, has held opponents to a .225 average and has walked just three batters over three starts (and one relief appearance) since rejoining the Rangers.

Holland has faced the Twins twice, amassing a 3.86 ERA against them.

It’s worth noting that Holland hasn’t figured out how to keep the ball in the park yet. He allowed 26 homers in just 138.1 innings last season and has served up four gopher balls in 18.1 innings this year.

In one start against Holland each, Delmon Young and Nick Punto have both taken him deep.

Interestingly enough, Minnesota’s Scott Baker has the same affliction. His seven homers allowed in 60.1 innings are “good” by his standards. But long balls haven’t stopped Baker from being an effective pitcher overall. He’s walked just 13 batters this season and has a healthy strikeout rate.

The Rangers have been fairly tough on Baker in his career, hitting five homers in 36 innings and giving him a 5.25 ERA against them. Big Nelson Cruz has Baker figured out; the power hitter has launched two homers off Baker in just six career at-bats.

This is a very even matchup on paper, but I give the Twins the edge. The Twins are 15-9 at home, really enjoying their new stadium.

Baker is also hot, having shut out the mighty New York Yankees for five innings in his last start.
