The Cubs’ Tom Gorzelanny has been quite the pleasant surprise for Chicago but he draws a tough matchup with Roy Halladay getting the ball for Philadelphia.

Poor Doc Halladay must feel like he’s still in Toronto, sporting almost as many losses as wins on his record despite the itty-bitty 2.19 ERA. Whatever the Phillies’ offense does, you can bet Halladay will be stingy on Sunday night. Doc has walked just 19 batters in 19 starts this season. He’s allowed one run or fewer in 10 of those outings. He’s 0-2 against the Cubs in two career outings but does have a 3.00 ERA over that span. 
Does All-Star Marlon Byrd have Halladay figured out? He’s faced Doc 13 times in his career, smacking five hits, including two doubles and a triple, for a .385 average.
It seems an unheralded starter steps up for the Cubbies every season. Last year, it was Randy Wells. This year, Tom Gorzelanny gets that honor. He’s been effective in a variety of roles, sometimes pitching in relief and starting in 12 of his 18 appearances. He’s whiffing more than a batter per inning and has allowed just four homers in 74 frames this season.
But has Gorzelanny been a little bit lucky? His 1.41 WHIP is extremely high for a guy with a 3.16 ERA and his 36 walks in 74 innings are just plain ugly. The Phillies could really punish him if he doesn’t throw enough strikes and puts too many batters on base.
Also, Gorzelanny has won just one of his six starts at Wrigley Field this season. Given that he’s due to come back to Earth and that Halladay is on the hill for the Phillies, it’s awfully hard to bet against the road team on Sunday night.
