Sunday Night Baseball Pick: St. Louis Cardinals vs Milwaukee Brewers

Teams have begun the 2010 Major League Baseball season. It’s time to NOW bring your best baseball betting hat to the table for gambling on baseball in the 2010 season. Cappers Picks all season long provides MLB baseball gambling predictions, so check back often.

The National League Central sure is crowded and it’s shown us plenty of mediocrity over the years. However, we can’t say it hasn’t given us good rivalries, too. The Cardinals and Brewers both probably hate the Cubs more than each other but they should still treat us to a spirited affair on Sunday night.

ESPN Sunday Night Baseball Prediction – Sunday, April 11, 8:05 p.m. ET

St. Louis Cardinals (2-1), first place in NL Central
Milwaukee Brewers (2-1), first place in NL Central

MLB Odds:

Yankees: Spread: +1.5 / ML: +100
Red Sox: Spread -1.5 / ML: -120

Chris Carpenter makes his first start since getting mad at Cincinnati umpires for not rubbing down baseballs last Monday. Randy Wolf looks to stay undefeated as a Brewer.

Chris Carpenter (1-0, 3.00 ERA)
Randy Wolf (1-0, 5.40 ERA)

Randy Wolf did in his first start what the Brewers hope he can do all season: eat innings, strike out a decent number of hitters, avoid walking batters and survive the odd long ball, as Wolf does allow plenty of those. His ability to avoid gopher balls gets a major test Sunday night, as the lefty faces right-handed power hitters Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday.

While Pujols hasn’t gone yard off Wolf in 17 plate appearances against him all-time, Holliday bats .313 with a homer and six RBI in 18 matchups against Wolf.

Chris Carpenter is a relatively human 4-3 with a 3.73 ERA in his career against the Brewers but it’s worth noting that he’s done a great job suppressing Milwaukee’s power, allowing just two homers in 60.1 career innings against the Brew Crew. In fact, Ryan Braun is hitless in six at-bats against Carpenter in his career.

The Cards should, however, pitch around the ticking time bomb that is Prince Fielder.

The big bopper, fresh off a 46-homer season, was still looking for his first long ball through Thursday night’s games. He’s a .364 career hitter against Carpenter and is one of the only active Brewers to go yard off him in his career.

In the end, I like St. Louis to slip past Milwaukee on Sunday night. Carpenter was actually better away from home last season and no Brewer besides Fielder has a good track record against him. Wolf, on the other hand, could be in trouble if he leaves balls hanging against St. Louis’ right-handed power.

Pick the defending division champs.
