Sunday Night Baseball Pick: N.Y. Mets vs St. Louis Cardinals

Teams have begun the 2010 Major League Baseball season. It’s time to NOW bring your best baseball betting hat to the table for gambling on baseball in the 2010 season. Cappers Picks all season long provides MLB baseball gambling predictions, so check back often.

After two weeks, it appeared the New York Mets were destined to wallow in the basement of the National League East. But maybe something changed when they won the 20-inning war with the St. Louis Cardinals last Saturday. Since then, they’re showing signs of life.

ESPN Sunday Night Baseball Prediction – Sunday, April 18, 8:05 p.m. ET

Atlanta Braves (8-7, 3rd place in NL East)
New York Mets (7-9, 5th place in NL East)

MLB Odds:

Mets: Spread: +1.5 (-105) / ML: +220 / Over 7.5
Cardinals: Spread -1.5 (-115) / ML: -260 / Under 7.5

Mike Pelfrey in particular has been outstanding and he’ll get the nod for New York against the Braves on Sunday night.

Braves – Hanson (1-1) vs. Mets – Pelfrey (3-0)

What is it that’s finally clicking for former first-round pick Mike Pelfrey? He’s been untouchable so far this season, winning all three of his starts and even mowing down the Rockies at Coors Field.

It’s especially encouraging to see Pelfrey pitch well on the road, as he’s traditionally struggled away from home.

It’s possible that we should ignore Pelfrey’s history against the Braves altogether – he’s that hot – but the numbers stand out. He’s just 2-5 with a 6.05 ERA against Atlanta in his career.

Brian McCann seriously has his number, batting .444 off him with a homer and seven RBI in 27 at-bats. It’s possible, then, that the Braves could be the team to end Pelfrey’s honeymoon.

Another reason why the Mets are a shaky play this Sunday night: Mr. Tommy Hanson. The Braves’ ace hasn’t found his control yet but his stuff is plenty electric; he’s whiffed 18 batters in 16 innings so far this year.

He’s faced the Mets once in his short-but-sweet career and answered the bell with seven scoreless innings and eight strikeouts.

The Braves bats overall have disappointed, so they may not absolutely rout Pelfrey. But I believe they’ll get to him and put up a few runs, which should be enough.

Hanson should mow down the struggling Mets lineup and add to his outstanding 12-5 career record in his 25th career start.

Gambling Trends:

Atlanta is 2-4 SU in its last 6 games
Atlanta is 13-4 SU in its last 17 games on the road
Atlanta is 8-1 SU in its last 9 games when playing NY Mets
Atlanta is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games when playing on the road against NY Mets

NY Mets are 4-1 SU in its last 5 games at home
NY Mets are 1-8 SU in its last 9 games when playing Atlanta
