Detroit Tigers (38-31 through June 17)
Phil Coke (1-6 3.69 ERA)

With the Indians really struggling in June the Tigers have really taken advantage of that to snag the AL Central lead from them. Their offense has been solid ranking 9th in the Majors in runs scored and 5th in team batting average. The pitching has been the problem in the Motor City this season, but their staff is the main reason for their solid play this month and in 6 of their last 10 games they have not given up more than 2 runs.

Tigers’ starter Phil Coke got his first win of the season in his last start going 6 innings only giving up 4 hits and 1 earned run. The Tigers are only 1-5 in Coke’s last 5 starts.

Miguel Cabrera has been getting it done all season hitting .319 with 13 HR and 47 RBI and he has been swinging a hot bat lately batting .353 in the month of June. The Tigers have a solid middle lineup, as besides Cabrera they have 4 other guys with at least 35 RBI on the season.

Colorado Rockies (36-34 through June17)
Ubaldo Jimenez (1-7 4.63 ERA)

The Rockies ended the month of May really slumping losing 7 of their last 8 games, but in June they are one game over .500 and trail the Giants in the wide-open NL West by 5.5 games. They have a pretty well-balanced team ranking 11th in runs scored and 13th in team ERA. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Ubaldo Jimenez has been terrible at home this season and he was shelled in his last start there giving up 7 earned runs in only 5 innings of work. Colorado is 1-7 in Jimenez’s last 8 home starts.

Troy Tulowitzki is the big bat in the Rockies’ lineup with 13 HR and 45 RBI and he has been hitting .364 this month, but is only hitting .269 at home this season. Even though Coors’ fiels is a hitter’s park Tulowitzki is the only Colorado player with double digits in HR. For the Rockies to win they will need clutch hitting from Tulowitzki, Todd Helton (.315 9 HR 30 RBI), and Carlos Gonzalez (.277 9 HR 38 RBI). Gonzalez has been on fire lately hitting .444 in his last 7 games.

The Pick

The Tigers have a lot of confidence coming into this series with their recent good play and Saturday’s starter Coke is coming off his best start of the season. On the other side of the coin Ubaldo Jimenez can’t seem to get it going at home this season. I’m not sold on either hurler and clutch hitting will be the key in this game.
