The Cubs welcome in another AL Central Division opponent when the Detroit Tigers stop by for a 2 game series starting Tuesday night. The Cubs still one of the hottest teams in baseball even despite getting shut down by White Sox ace Chris Sale last time out.
The Cubs had won 9 in row prior to Sunday’s loss and have still won 15 of their last 17 games. The Cubs did strike out an astounding 18 times in Sunday’s loss.
For the Tigers, things haven’t gotten any better as they have lost 3 in a row and are now 5 games below the break-even mark.

Trying to get them back on track, they’ll send RH Anibal Sanchez to the mound. Countering him will be Cubs RH Jason Hammel.
Detroit Tigers
The Tigers are in the midst of one of their worst seasons in quite some time. Losers of 3 in a row, the Tigers dropped the final 2 games of their weekend series against the Astros.
Kicking them while they’re down, Jose Altuve walked off the Astros with a bottom of the 9th single to defeat the Tigers Sunday afternoon.
Falling 5 games under .500 and essentially out of the division race, the Wild Card is the only likely option for Detroit at this point.
Trying to get them back into it, Anibal Sanchez takes the rubber on Tuesday. Sanchez brings in a 10-10 record with an ERA of nearly 5.00 at 4.95.

Sanchez had went through a stretch in the middle of the season where he won 7 straight decisions. Since then, he holds an 0-3 record with an ERA of 6.94 over 4 starts.
The RH holds the major league lead for most home runs allowed on the season at 28 total. Over his last 5 outings, he’s allowed 9 home runs.
Chicago Cubs
The Cubs are going in the complete opposite direction of the Detroit Tigers at this point. The Cubs have won 9 of 10 and 15 of 17. However, they are in one of the toughest divisions in baseball and sit 8.0 games behind the Cardinals for first place.
As far as the Wild Card goes, the Cubs hold the #2 spot, 2.0 games behind the Pirates and 4.0 ahead of the Giants.
Trying to get back into the win column, the Cubs will go with RH Jason Hammel on Tuesday night. Hammel brings in a 6-5 record with an ERA of only 3.10.
Hammel has struggled lately though with his innings of work as he’s failed to make it through 6 innings in 6 straight starts now. He threw just 65 pitches in his last start even though he allowed only 1 run over 5.2 innings.

Hammel hasn’t had much career success against the Tigers either. In eight career appearances (five starts) Hammel is 2-2 with a ridiculous ERA of 7.18. This though will be the first time seeing them since 2013.
