Detroit started out red hot, but they were swept by the Seattle Mariners this week. New York is 10-8 after dropping two out of three against the Rangers in Texas.
Justin Verlander will be on the mound for the Tigers in this one. Verlander won the AL MVP award last year because he had one of the most dominating years you will ever see out of a starting pitcher. Verlander has a WHIP of just 0.80 so far this year, and his ERA is only 1.72. This guy just continues to shut down opposing offenses every single time out. Detroit’s offense will certainly finish as one of the best in baseball. Prince Fielder was plugged into the middle of an already-potent offense. Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder might be the most feared 3-4 hitters in the game. Overall, Detroit’s offensive numbers are mediocre so far primarily due to slow starts from guys like Brennan Boesch and Jhonny Peralta.
The Yankees will have Ivan Nova as their starter for Game One of this series. Nova turned out to be the big surprise of the staff last year, and he has started out 2012 in good form once again. Nova has an ERA of 3.79 and he is already 3-0. Nova has quickly become one of the team’s best pitchers.
The Yankees offense has been consistently very good so far this year. The team is third in the majors in runs scored. The team is second in baseball with 29 homers, and they have a team batting average of .325. Derek Jeter is off to one of the best starts of his career, and that has really helped the offense thrive. Jeter is hitting .420 through the team’s first 18 games. Expect the Yankees offense to put up big numbers all year. This lineup is stacked from top to bottom.
It’s hard to bet against the Yankees at home, but Justin Verlander is the best pitcher in baseball right now. Look for Verlander to stop the Tigers recent slide with a great performance.
