MLB Matchup Stats | MLB ATS Insider Preview

The folks in Chicago set to take in this finale will be in for a star-studded pitching matchup in this one. Both teams will be sending out their ace, as the Tigers give the ball to Max Scherzer, and the White Sox counter with southpaw Chris Sale.

Scherzer is the ace of the Tigers’ staff. He certainly hasn’t pitched like on ace of late though. Mind you, the team does have wins in eight of his last 10 starts. The trouble has come in his last four starts, with each of those two losses coming along the way.

Scherzer was able to pick up the win in his last start, though he surrendered four earn runs in 6 2/3 innings, allowing 11 hits. That’s been a bad trend for Scherzer of late, as he’s allowed at least eight hits in each of his last four starts. In those four starts, he’s posted a 6.84 ERA and 1.90 WHIP. Scherzer’s faced the White Sox twice this season, allowing two runs in 12 innings of work, earning the win in each outing.

Chris Sale counters, and he’s been a real stud in limited action for the White Sox this season. He missed better than a month due to injury, but he hasn’t missed a beat since returning. He was rolling right along against the Los Angeles Angels in his last start before being left in a little long and giving up a bomb to Mike Trout.

In the start before that, Sale dominated the San Diego Padres, allowing one run on only two hits while strike out nine in a complete game win.

Sale has just been pitching at another level of late, and now gets a Tigers team that has endured some struggles of late. The reputation that the Tigers bring to town allow us to get in on at a reasonable price on a true ace.

While Scherzer’s had some trouble of late, expect to see him settle down against a White Sox lineup that’s had some struggles against right-handed pitching this season. On the other side, Sale has simply been lights out of late. A little hiccup in his last outing isn’t reason for concern.

The White Sox are 5-1 in Sale’s last six home starts, and 21-8 in his last 29 starts as a home favorite.

The under is 11-3-1 in Scherzer’s last 15 road starts, and it is 4-0 in Sale’s last four home starts.

The play: Chicago -110, Under 7
