MLB: Detroit Searching For Momentum In Cleveland

Detroit has done seemingly everything in its power to let Minnesota & Chicago back into the AL Central race. However, the Tigers pulled out a crucial game on Sunday against the Twins to keep their lead at 3-games in the standings. Was that victory just a temporary stoppage of the bleeding, or is Detroit ready to assume command again and start a strong season ending run before the MLB playoffs? We could find out tonight when they visit slumping Cleveland on Tuesday night.

The Tigers are just a -130 favorite, but that line looks attractive enough to over 90% of Sportsbook.com bettors at last check.

Recently, Detroit has taken on the look of Mets’ teams, playing carelessly in the month of September. The Tigers (79-70, -1.1 units) looked to be cruising to their first division crown since 1987. (Most forget they were a wild card in 2006, losing the division on the final day of the season). Detroit has lost nine of its last 13 games.

Manager Jim Leyland has been around baseball to know everything doesn’t go as planned and he’s become the focal point of the Tigers collapse. He’ll receive the credit if Detroit holds on and wins the division; however he’ll be blamed unmercifully if they don’t finish the job. “I don’t want to sound like a prophet, but I said a long time ago, at the start of the season, that there was a good chance this thing would go to the last week, to the last few games, and it’s going to,” Jim Leyland said. Not exactly the kind of positive reinforcement Tigers’ fans and bettors had in mind.

Leyland will hand the ball tonight to Edwin Jackson (12-7, 3.37 ERA), in search of consecutive wins for just the second time since starting September with five straight wins.Bet on Baseball at sportsbook.com Jackson has lost the command of his slider in his last two outings, surrendering four home runs, with a 7.50 ERA. It’s not a given his teams will back him up either since Detroit is 15-24 as visitors after three or more consecutive road games this season.

The biggest benefit for the Tigers could be their opponent, Cleveland (61-88, -27.1 units). It would be reasonable to say the Indians have had their bags packed for some time, waiting for this season to conclude. Cleveland has lost eight in a row, 12 of 13 and 17 of its last 20.

Aaron Laffey (7-6, 4.09) doesn’t look to add much comfort for the Tribe. He’s given up 12 earned runs over 9 1/3 innings, both coming on extended rest, as manager Eric Wedge believed Laffey was showing signs of fatigue. Prior to these last two outings, he had been one of Cleveland’s most consistent starters (in a positive sense) and is 4-1 at home.

Cleveland is 4-12 having lost eight or more of their last 10 games this season and sets up as a +120 underdog with a total of Un8.5 at Sportsbook.com. With the offense miserable, the Indians are 0-10 after scoring four runs or less six straight games and they are 23-9 UNDER after a loss by four runs or more this season. This is the perfect team for Detroit to start a winning streak and they are 43-27 when the money line is -100 to -150 this season. With Jackson on the mound, the Tigers are 13-3 UNDER on this road this year. Laffey is scheduled to throw the first pitch at 7:05 Eastern and Tigers and Indians fans can watch locally, with Detroit holding an 11-4 edge in the season series.
