MLB Betting: The first half of the 2010 MLB betting season will officially come to a close on ESPN’s Sunday night baseball broadcast when the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers partake in the finale of their four-game series.

The Cubs picked up some momentum in the desert by sweeping the Arizona Diamondbacks, but their three-game winning streak was halted in Thursday night’s series opener after the Dodgers scored the 3-2 come-from-behind victory. SS Rafael Furcal had a solid night going 3-for-3, and his 2-run bomb in the 7th inning was just enough run support to allow L Clayton Kershaw to lock down his ninth win of the season.

The loss dropped the Cubs to a sickening 10-games under .500 (38-48), and they entered Friday night’s match-up the worst bet in the National League having cost their baseball betting backer’s upwards of $2120 on the year. Chicago currently sits 10.5-games out in the NL Central and 9.5-games out in the Wild Card chase.

With the trade deadline fast approaching, Cubs brass will be forced with the decision of whether they should blow this team up and start from scratch or not. Manager Lou Piniella’s club has now become a major disappointment each of the L/2 seasons, and they could receive some solid younger talent if they decide to try and move some of their veterans.

By winning seven of their L/10 games ($357), manager Joe Torre’s squad is now tied with the Colorado Rockies and New York Mets for the NL Wild Card lead. They also sit just three-games in back of the NL West leading San Diego Padres.

At 47-38 overall heading into Friday night’s battle, LA finds itself on the plus-side of the $$$ rankings having made MLB bettors a shade over $175 on the year. It’s done most of its damage within the friendly confines of Dodgers Stadium where it boasts a 26-17 overall record ($226).

Carlos Silva gets the primetime nod for this match-up; he’ll be in search of his 10th win of the season and second in a row after he picked up his first win since the beginning of June against Arizona.

He’s revitalized his career as a member of the Cubs and enters his 17th start of the season 9-2 with a miniscule 2.96 ERA & 1.07 WHIP with a K/BB ratio of 70/16 through 100.1 total innings pitched; the Cubs have won 11 of his previous 16 starts.

Silva’s excelled mightily against the Dodgers throughout his career going 3-0 with a 4.08 ERA & 1.19 WHIP through 17.2 combined IP. He’s a perfect 5-0 with a 3.05 ERA in seven road starts this season.

Opposing the righty will be the Dodgers Vicente Padilla who will be making his fifth start since returning to action from the DL. After earning a loss and no decision in his first two outings, the righty has won each of his L/2 starts. The last one coming against the Florida Marlins whom he limited to six hits and a pair of ER’s through 6.2 innings of work.

The Dodgers are 2-1 in his three home starts where he sports a 3.05 ERA & 0.92 WHIP to go along with a dominating K/BB ratio of 23/3. He’s 3-4 in six career starts vs. the Cubs.

Chicago entered Friday night’s contest 12-14 (-$260) vs. teams with a winning record, and just 18-23 (-$920) in night games.

As for LA, it’s taken advantage of lesser competition on the year winning 18 of 29 games ($290) vs. sub .500 opponents.

The ‘under’ is 6-1-1 the L/8 times these famed franchises locked horns.
