ATS Matchup Insight | CappersPicks Insider Preview

Cleveland (51-50) fell to 6.5 games behind first-place Detroit in the division after dropping two of three to Minnesota.

The Indians’ offense has stalled as of late, and will hope it can find some momentum against Kansas City behind Carlos Santana, who went 6-for-13 with a homer and two doubles in the series against the Twins, and is batting .313 in his career versus the Royals.

Meanwhile, Kansas City (50-50) has rebound from a rough 1-7 patch, wining two straight to reside seven games back in the division.

The Royals were able to squeeze out a 2-1 victory at U.S. Cellular Wednesday in the rubber match with the White Sox.

Norichika Aoki singled in Mike Moustakas for the game winner, when Chicago catcher Tyler Flowers dropped the ball.

Cleveland will now try to rebound when it opens the series with Corey Kluber on the hill.

The 28-year-old won his third straight start with a 6-2 victory over Detroit on Saturday, allowing seven hits in 8 2/3 innings. He faces Kansas City for the fourth time in 2014, owning an impressive 4-1 career mark versus the Royals, who he has limited to a .222 batting average.

Kansas City will counter with left-hander Danny Duffy, who looks to recover from a loss against Boston on Saturday.

That loss was his third straight and fifth in six decisions.

Nevertheless, the 25-year-old has thrown the ball well with a 2.66 ERA, but is only 5-10 on the season. The reason. He has gotten very little run support for his efforts, yielding just 12 runs and 32 hits in his last 37 1/3 innings.

Duffy dropped to 1-1 in his career against Cleveland after permitting four runs on 10 hits in six innings back on July 6.

Notes:

1. Kansas City’s Eric Hosmer saw his career-best 16-game hitting streak come to an end Wednesday and is 4-for-25 in his career versus Kluber.
2. Cleveland’s Jose Ramirez had an RBI double and collected two of his team’s five hits Wednesday in place of fellow SS Asdrubal Cabrera, who is nursing lower back pain.
3. Royals LF Alex Gordon went 7-for-11 in the three-game series versus the White Sox.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Indians

These are too very close teams in the standings and in need of wins.

It’s a tossup with Cleveland winning more with Kluber then Kansas City does with Duffy, but Kluber has a better record against the Royals this year.
