Cincinnati

As a team they are still not doing much at the plate as Joey Votto is one of only two regulars who is hitting over .230 – who knows where they would be if Devin Mesoraco, the backup catchers wasn’t hitting .515 and leading the team with 11 RBIs.

This is a very powerful lineup that could explode at any moment and they have handled Liriano well in the past.

The Reds might not have gotten off to the kind of start they wanted but it is hard to blame Leake. The slight righthander has three quality starts in three outings including a win against Pittsburgh last weekend.

He doesn’t dominate the way that some others on the Reds staff can but the results are there. He is just harder to hit than you think. The last time around the Pirates didn’t do too much.

Pittsburgh:

After a reasonably good start the Pirates are not playing good baseball right now. It doesn’t help that they have been playing the hottest team in the league to start the season (Milwaukee, losing 6 of 7), this team has been hitting poorly and not pitching well enough to overcome it. They are 27th in the Majors with a team batting average of .232. The only reason things are not worse is that they are 2nd in the league in homers. Pedro Alvarez leading the way with 6 is no surprise but Neil Walker has 6 as well and there is no way he is keeping up that pace

Last season Francisoo Liriano was superb. When he was good with Minnesota it seemed like he was doing it on stuff alone but last year it llooked like he finally figured out how to pitch. This year has certaiinly not been bad but the results have not been there with an 0-3 record through 4 starts. It hasn’t been night and day but he has been a better pitcher at home this season. He is looking for some payback against the Reds in this one.

When you are in a funk you need you ace starter to get you out of it and that is what I think Liriano will do on Monday.

Per the above he has been pitching pretty well, striking out more than a batter per inning and catches a lineup that is struggling right now. Just pitch around Votto and he should be more than OK.
