Cincinnati

The entire division has been playing mediocre ball for the past couple of weeks as they and the Pirates keep jockeying behind the Cardinals. The Reds have been doing it more with pitching than hitting this season as they own the 4th best ERA in the Majors.

They are looking for a rebound on the mound tonight after giving up 11 runs in the series opener.

Starter Mike Leake seems to be finally living up to his selection as the 8th overall pick in the draft back in 2009. He leads the Reds in wins and ERA yet it seems like there is always a rumour that he is going to lose his spot in the rotation. He has been especially sharp lately as only once in his last 7 starts has he yielded more than 1 ER.

It should come as no surprise that the Reds are 6-1 in those contests. The Reds have some fearsome arms on their team for sure but you can’t argue against Leake’s effectiveness in 2013.

Arizona

Arizona jumped all over Cincinnati in the opener handing Reds ace Johnny Cueto his first loss of the season. As has become commonplace this season “Goldy”, 1B Paul Goldschmidt did most of the damage, hitting his 18th and 19th home runs of the season and adding to his National League leading RBI total. The slugger also got some help from unlikely sources as OF Gerardo Parra also went yard and Willie Bloomquist cranked out 3 hits. The normally light hitting utility man is batting .345. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Lefty rookie Patrick Corbin is a perfect 9-0 this season – Arizona is 13-1 in his starts.

Early on I was dismissing the success of the young lefty but it is getting harder and harder to do so with each outing. As good as his overall numbers are Corbin is even more locked in at Chase Field where his already impressive ERA drops to 1.71.

All this from a rookie from Chipola College, hardly the pedigree of his opposite for the Reds – Leake

Its easy to make a case for either squad in this one. Both teams are pretty good and have their most successful pitchers on the mound – even if that is hard to believe. I am going to favour the Diamondbacks primarily because they are at home where Corbin has been lights out.

The Reds do have some scary hitters but the lefty should be able to neutralize the reds best sluggers 1B Joey Votto and OF Jay Bruce.

O/U Pick: Under Score
Prediction: Arizona 4 – Cincinnati 3
