ATS Matchup Insight | CappersPicks Insider Preview

The Cubs (29-39) are on a roll, and after taking two of three in Philadelphia over the weekend, survived a 13 inning outing on Monday to beat the Marlins 5-4, on a pinch-hit RBI double from pitcher Travis Wood.

Short Stop Starlin Castro also chipped in for the Cubs, and continued his streak of three or more hits in 11 games this season, tying him with for the most in the league.

Meanwhile, Miami (35-34) has dropped four of its last five after Monday’s loss, and are in danger of losing back-to-back series at home for only the second time this season.

The Marlins are 23-14 at home, and are led by third baseman Casey McGehee, who is hitting .435 during an 11-game hitting streak after reaching base in five of his six plate appearances in game one.

However, McGehee has not performed well against pitcher Jeff Samardzija, who is scheduled to start on the mound for Chicago on Tuesday.

Samardzija has just two wins this season, losing his last outing against the Pirates, after allowing four runs and a season-high nine hits over six innings. The right-hander is 3-1 with a 4.93 ERA in five starts against Miami, including a win at home on June 7.

Miami will counter with 24-year-old Anthony DeSclafani, who has returned to the Marlins’ rotation after making four starts in Triple-A. The righty is 1-1, after following up a solid performance in his MLB debut against the Dodgers with a five-run loss to Philadelphia.

DeSclafani will look to get himself back in the rails against the Cubs, who are hitting just .232 as a team, with just over three runs per game.

Notes

1. Miami 3B Casey McGehee reached base in five of his six plate appearances Monday and is hitting .435 during an 11-game hitting streak, which matches his career high.
2. Cubs SS Starlin Castro has recorded three or more hits in 11 games this season, tying him with Colorado’s Troy Tulowitzki for the most in the majors.
3. McGehee (2-for-11) and Marlins RF Giancarlo Stanton (3-for-13) have not fared well against Samardzija.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Cubs-

After Monday’s win, the Cubs knotted up the all-time series at 85-85 apiece, and are now 40-40 in Miami.

I expect Samardzija to be able to put up a another solid outing against the Marlins as he did earlier this season, while getting just enough offense to lift the Cubs to win.
