First place in the NL East is on the line when the Atlanta Braves begin a three game series against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia tonight. The game is scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m.

Atlanta is coming off a huge three game sweep of the Mets this past weekend to stay three games behind Philadelphia in the NL East. The Braves are 86-64 overall and 34-41 straight up on the road. They are 14-24 as an underdog and 71-71-8 against the ‘over/under’ line. The total has stayed ‘under’ in eight of the last 11 games of this series played in Philadelphia.

Right hander Jair Jurrjens will be on the mound tonight for Atlanta. He is 7-6 with an ERA of 4.64 in 20 starts this season. Last time out he only lasted five innings after giving up nine hits and four earned runs in a loss to Washington. Jurrjens is 3-3 with a 2.56 ERA lifetime against the Phillies.

The Braves have averaged 6.14 runs in their last seven wins. They are ranked fourth in the NL with a team batting average of .261 and 701 total runs scored. Four players have over 70 RBI led by Brian McCann’s 74 providing great balance throughout the lineup.  McCann also leads the team in homeruns with 20.

One thing that Philadelphia knows how to do is win games in the month of September. The Phillies are 15-3 SU in their last 18 games and have the best record in the NL at 89-61. They are 50-28 SU at home and 66-45 as the favorite. Against the ‘over/under’  line they have gone 70-78-2.

Cole Hamels will get the start tonight for Philadelphia. The left hander is 11-10 with a 3.01 ERA in 30 starts this year. Hamels pitched 6.2 innings in his last start, giving up five hits and one earned run in a win over Florida. Lifetime against the Braves he is 8-5 with an ERA of 4.25.

The Phillies’ bats have come alive during their recent seven game winning streak, averaging 6.71 runs per game. They have a team batting average of .260, ranking them sixth in the NL. They are ranked third in runs scored with 714. Ryan Howard remains the undisputed leader on this team with 104 RBI and 30 HR’s.

The Braves have had good success against Philadelphia in the recent past; winning five of the last six games these teams have has played. In their last trip here in July, they won two out of three and are 3-3 in Philly this season. Atlanta knows it needs to win Game 1 with Roy Halladay and Roy Oswalt on the mound for games two and three.
