The Boston Red Sox kick off a four-game set against the Detroit Tigers this Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park with both teams battling for first place in their division. Game time is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. and it will be broadcast on the MLB Network.

Boston has all but erased the memory of a horrible start with eight wins in its last 10 games that have it just a half a game behind New York in the AL East heading into Wednesday’s game against Cleveland. The Red Sox are 26-22 overall; 16-10 at home and 10-12 on the road.

Everything is starting to come around for Boston as it has scored an average of 5.5 runs per game in its last 11, while allowing just 3.3 runs per game in its last seven. The Red Sox are now ranked second in AL in hitting with a team batting average of .262. Alfredo Aceves will get the start in this game. The right hander recently moved into the starting rotation and held the Cubs to three hits and one earned run in five innings of work in his first start last Saturday.

Detroit had a three-game winning streak heading into Wednesday’s series finale against Tampa Bay. It is 25-23 on the year and in second-place in the AL Central, but still trailing Cleveland by a full six games. The Tigers are 12-15 on the road, but a solid 13-8 at home.

They pounded out a combined 13 runs in two wins over the Rays earlier this week with Alex Avila and Miguel Cabrera leading the way. Cabrera leads the team with 34 RBI and nine home runs. Right hander Max Scherzer will try and bounce back from his first loss of the season after six straight wins. He has an ERA of 2.98 and a 1.37 WHIP in 10 previous starts.

Head-to-head, the Red Sox swept the Tigers two straight last week in Boston. They posted a 1-0 shutout as a 178 favorite and 4-3 victory as a 133 favorite . The total stayed ‘under’ in the first game and ended as a ‘push’ in the second against a line of seven runs.

Detroit lost both games last season against Boston with Scherzer on the mound, but stick with the Tigers in this one as he returns to form to secure the win.
