Red Sox vs Yankees Baseball Picks

It really isn’t baseball season until we get our first tastes of Red Sox vs. Yankees. Boston has gotten off to a bit of a sluggish start but did take two of three from Texas to wipe the sour taste the Brewers left in their mouth with a sweep over the weekend.

Boston

The offense for the BoSox is running hot and cold but Big Papi is finding the zone just in time to come to the Bronx. His homer yesterday was the difference in the game as he continues his mastery of the big moments. Whichever team wins the series could be in first place on Monday

Clay Buchholz had a spectacular season last year, posting an ERA of 1.74 over 108 innings. He only gave up 21 earned runs all of last season and this year has already given up more than a quarter of that.

I am not saying we need to be overly concerned but last year might have set some expectations that are unreasonable for a guy who does not make a lot of people swing and miss.

New York

Masahiro Tanaka is living up to his billing but other Yankee offseason acquisitions are not as New York heads into this series with Boston with a losing record.

Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann were supposed to power the lineup but they have only one homer between them and McCann is not even hitting his own weight.

Thanks to Tanaka the pitching has been solid but they have no more Mariano Rivera and incumbent David Robertson is on the DL. Their lack of bullpen depth hurt them in their loss to the O’s last night.

Since acquiring Michael Pineda from Seattle the Yankees have gotten nothing from him. After missing the last two seasons due to injury the big righthander finally took the mound last week against Toronto and showed why many were so hot on him after his rookie season in Seattle.

If he can be a contributor throughout the season New York may be able to stay in the race despite other weaknesses.

This first clash will set the tone for the season and I think we will see a close one. Look for some some late game heroics like a walk off single by Jeter to win the ball game – someone has to put Koji Uehara in his place. I like the Yanks to win but feel even better about the over.

There will be some balls leaving the yard in this one.

Total prediction: Over
Score prediction: New York 6 – Boston 5
