Bodog MLB Betting: The Bettor’s Box

This week’s MLB Bettor’s Box article with in depth analysis for betting on MLB Baseball odds, futures, team and player props at Bodog Sportsbook for this week’s big games in baseball…

The Bettor’s Box

It’s not exactly the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic just yet, but this nasty bug that’s going around needs to be taken seriously. Philadelphia Phillies slugger and former league MVP Ryan Howard had to miss Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles (+160) after spending the previous two nights in hospital with flu-like symptoms.Phillies trainer Scott Sheridan told reporters that Howard needed a CT scan and might have a sinus infection.

Watch the medical reports coming out of the Phillies clubhouse this week as they prepare for a World Series rematch with the Tampa Bay Rays. We’ll pass by Tropicana Field during this week’s MLB betting preview; first, we’ve got the same interleague rivalry that led off last week.

Series: Chicago Cubs at Chicago White Sox

After the two Chicago clubs split a pair of games in their rain-shortened series at Wrigley, their venue switches to U.S. Cellular Field on the south side of town, where the White Sox are 16-18 (-6.97 units) compared to 17-18 (+3.79 units) away. The Cubs are in the more common position of being worse on the road (13-18, -7.19 units) than at Wrigley (21-13, +2.22 units), where they just completed a successful homestand with a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Indians.

Series: New York Yankees at New York Mets

The Subway Series resumes at Citi Field, where the Mets are 19-13 (+1.09 units) on the season; however, they lost two of three at home to both the Phillies and the Rays and are only 6-11 overall in June.Sports Betting at the Sportsbook The slumping Mets might have their hands full with this one, but the betting value is rarely with the Yankees, who are 17-17 (-3.81 units) on the road this year and have dropped two series since taking two of three from the Mets at the new Yankee Stadium.

Series: San Francisco Giants at Oakland Athletics

The A’s are still playing at the Oakland Coliseum, where they’re a winning team at 16-15 (-0.36 units) despite having one of the worst batting lineups in the majors. Check out these home splits for the A’s compared to the Mets:

A’s: 31 games, 145 runs, .687 OPS
Mets: 31 games, 144 runs, .782 OPS

Now that’s efficiency. Oakland’s pitching has gotten them through some rough spots as well, but Josh Outman (3.48 ERA, 1.16 WHIP) has elbow tightness and could miss his scheduled Wednesday start against Randy Johnson (5.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP). The Giants are thinking about investing in Outman voodoo dolls at 13-19 (-4.38 units) on the road.

Colorado Rockies at L.A. Angels (Tuesday, 10:05 p.m. Eastern)

The Rockies are the hottest commodity in baseball at 18-5 since Jim Tracy took over from Clint Hurdle as manager. They’ve won 16 of their last 17 games to vault into winning territory at 36-33, including 19-18 (+6.89 units) on the road. Ubaldo Jimenez (3.73 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) is projected to start for the Rockies against Ervin Santana (7.47 ERA, 1.85 WHIP), who’s provided highly inconsistent pitching since returning from the DL with elbow trouble. An MRI taken last Tuesday came up clean, according to the Angels.

Philadelphia Phillies at Tampa Bay Rays (Thursday, 7:08 p.m. ET)

The last time we saw these two teams perform, Philadelphia stunned the Rays in five games to take the 2008 World Series. Andy Sonnanstine (6.60 ERA, 1.55 WHIP) was drilled for five runs (three earned) in four innings of Game 4; he’s back for more on the MLB Network against rookie Antonio Bastardo (5.21 ERA, 1.26 WHIP), a 23-year-old lefty from the Dominican with a quick delivery and a nasty change-up. Philadelphia is amazing on the road this year at 23-9 (+16.35 units), while Tampa Bay rules The Trop at 21-12 (+3.33 units).

Boston Red Sox at Atlanta Braves (Sunday, 1:30 p.m. ET)

The fine folks at TBS have this high-profile matchup between the team with the best record in the AL at 42-27 (+8.02 units) against one of the biggest money losers in the NL at 32-36 (-10.07 units). If the rotations hold, this will be Brad Penny (4.94 ERA, 1.55 WHIP) taking the hill for Boston versus Tommy Hanson (4.08 ERA, 1.58 WHIP). He’s a northpaw, an Oklahoma native, and a call-up from AAA-Gwinnett earlier this month. Hanson blanked the Reds (+110) over six innings on Thursday to win his most recent start.
