The Yankees live. At least for one more night.

AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES: New York Yankees at Texas Rangers

Game 6: Tonight, 8:07 p.m. ET
Phil Hughes (1-1, 5.73) vs Colby Lewis (1-0, 1.69)
MLB odds: Yankees -109, Rangers -101

They survived Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on the strength of C.C. Sabathia’s solid effort. Now, they’ll hope for a bounce-back outing from Phil Hughes tonight in Game 6.

Can the Yankees squeak out another win in Texas and force a climactic Game 7 showdown?

If there was ever a case to make for regular-season stats meaning nothing, Phil Hughes is the key piece of evidence. Entering Game 2, Hughes had an amazing track record against Texas. He was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA with 13 strikeouts and just three hits allowed in 15.1 innings. Unbelievable. But those numbers apparently meant nothing once Hughes took the hill for a playoff start on the road versus the Rangers.

Texas tagged Hughes for seven runs on 10 hits in just four innings last week. He couldn’t make an out to save his life. Naturally, the question bettors have to ask themselves tonight is: which version of Hughes will show up?

I can’t help but wonder if the “bad” Hughes is the one we’re more likely to see. He didn’t start a game against the Rangers in the 2010 regular season, only pitching one inning of relief against him, so his sterling historical numbers stem from a gem he tossed in 2009 against them and a dominant effort in his second pro start back in 2007. So perhaps those numbers don’t reflect how equipped Hughes is to face Texas today.

Maybe, then, we should’ve seen Hughes’ struggles coming. His ERA was 3.65 before the All-Star break and 4.90 after it this season. He didn’t come into the postseason at the top of his game. Could he struggle again versus the potent Texas lineup tonight?

Maybe, but I can’t shake that gut feeling that the Yankees have it in them to stay alive tonight. For Game 5, I made sure I found statistical evidence to back it up before I endorsed the Yankees. Better do the same for Game 6.

What should we expect from Colby Lewis? Including the regular season and playoffs, he has allowed two runs or fewer in seven straight outings. However, i think he’s been a bit lucky this postseason. Lewis has walked eight batters and allowed eight hits in 10.2 innings and only has two earned runs to show for it. You can only allow that many base runners for so long before you get burned.

Could the Yankees punish him tonight? Robinson Cano sure seems equipped to do so. He’s homered in four of five ALCS games and took Lewis deep in Game 2. The Bronx Bombers will really need Alex Rodriguez to step up, however. He was a force in the 2009 playoffs but is batting a putrid .214 with no homers this time around.

We definitely have a tough decision tonight. On one hand, the Yankees are missing Mark Teixeira (hamstring) and Phil Hughes’ confidence can’t be high after the Rangers rocked him last week. On the other hand, Lewis seems primed for a fall and the Rangers are just 1-3 at home in the 2010 playoffs.

I’m not saying the Rangers will choke altogether – after all, they still have Cliff Lee taking the mound in Game 7 – but something tells me they’ll have the jitters tonight. Look for New York to finally touch up Lewis and win what could be a high-scoring Game 6.
