Betting On MLB? Cappers Picks Baseball Power Rankings

Baseball Handicapping Tips

The MLB season isn’t quite a month old, but teams have begun to show us what they have to offer. There’s a long way still to go in a season that’s a marathon, not a sprint, but it’s these early opinions we formulate that will decide whether this season will be a profitable one for us or not.

Here are the power rankings entering the fifth week of the MLB schedule.

1. Atlanta Braves (17-7)

Big things were expected from Jason Heyward this season, and while he has yet to really deliver, the team has been just fine. Justin Upton has really re-found the form that made him highly coveted in his Arizona days. The team’s rotation has been outstanding with Ervin Santana and Alex Wood plugging a couple big holes.

2. Milwaukee Brewers (18-7)

The Brewer pitching staff has been a pleasant surprise, with Yovani Gallardo pitching like his old self, and Wily Peralta continuing his strong finish to the 2013 season. Losing Carlos Gomez for three games is going to hurt, but they seem to have escaped disaster on the Jean Segura front. This could be a make or break week with games against the Cardinals and Reds.

3. New York Yankees (15-10)

The Yankees do have some flaws, but they have enough high-end talent to carry them. The team’s rotation has been better than expected, but they’re really going to be tested now without Ivan Nova. Losing Michael Pineda for 10 days hurts as well, and who knows what the team will be getting when he’s back.

4. Oakland Athletics (15-10)

The Athletics dropped consecutive games to the Astros which are two games they could look back on at the end of the season. The team’s rotation has been strong, and their lineup has been surprisingly productive. Jed Lowrie has quietly been a key contributor near the top of the order, and Yoenis Cespedes has taken the step forward may hoped he would. Josh Donaldson’s 2013 season wasn’t a fluke.

5. St. Louis Cardinals (14-12)

The team’s rotation hasn’t been as good as advertised, and their bats have been colder than we’re used to, but they’re still within striking distance of a spot in the postseason, and it’s hard to imagine them not figuring things out sooner or later.

6. Texas Rangers (15-10)

The Ranger offense is too explosive not to really come alive at some point. A productive return from Matt Harrison is also a major boon to a staff always in need of quality arms. Getting the Athletics to open the week gives them a chance to make a statement.

7. San Francisco Giants (15-10)

The team’s offense has come crashing back to Earth after a better than expected start, but that hasn’t stopped the team from reeling off four consecutive wins. The Brandon Belt situation needs to be figured out immediately – they need him producing, regardless of where his name is in the batting order.

8. Detroit Tigers (12-9)

It hasn’t been a pretty ride, but the Tigers remain atop the A.L. Central standings. Getting Miguel Cabrera going has to be a top priority. A light schedule this week with only five games before returning home for a seven-game homestand next week.

9. Los Angeles Dodgers (14-12)

Talent has to win out at some point, but things are looking somewhat bleak in Los Angeles right now. Yasiel Puig is looking more and more like a mirage, and the team’s inability to score runs is starting to become a problem. Clayton Kershaw can’t return soon enough.

10. Washington Nationals (14-12)

Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmermann have both been slow out of the gate, yet the Nationals’ offense has done a fine job of compensating. Bryce Harper going down is going to hurt in that department. Getting a couple of days off and a couple more in Houston this week comes at the perfect time.

11. Los Angeles Angels (11-13)
12. Boston Red Sox (12-14)
13. Minnesota Twins (12-11)
14. Chicago White Sox (13-13)
15. Cincinnati Reds (11-14)
16. New York Mets (14-11)
17. Colorado Rockies (14-12)
18. Baltimore Orioles (12-12)
19. Philadelphia Phillies (13-12)
20. Toronto Blue Jays (12-13)
21. Kansas City Royals (12-12)
22. Tampa Bay Rays (11-14)
23. Seattle Mariners (10-14)
24. Pittsburgh Pirates (10-16)
25. San Diego Padres (12-14)
26. Miami Marlins (11-14)
27. Cleveland Indians (11-14)
28. Arizona Diamondbacks (8-20)
29. Houston Astros (9-17)
30. Chicago Cubs (8-16)
