ATS Matchup Insight | CappersPicks Insider Preview

Despite Friday’s loss, Baltimore (52-42) still sits atop the American League East, partly because its pitching staff has performed above average in winning seven of 10 going into the All Star break.

But that all changed on Friday during a 5-4 loss to the best team in the American League and quite possibly in the entire major league.

Baltimore took the lead in the fifth but couldn’t hang on as the A’s went to work late in the game.

Josh Donaldson clubbed a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as Oakland won its 12th in its last 13 at home and moved to 9-3 in its last 12 games, which has been decided by two runs or less.

Oakland (59-36) must now try to stay on track now if they want to kept the Angels from breathing down their necks and will send righty Jason Hammel to the mound in game two. It will only by the second start for Hammel as an Athletic, with his first ending in a 5-3 loss to San Francisco, when he gave up three runs in five innings.

The O’s will counter with left hander Wei-Yin Chen, who faces the dangerous Oakland attack for the second time this season. Chen has gone 9-3 in 2014 with a 4.15 ERA over 18 starts.

Baltimore was 5-2 against Oakland in 2013, but lost two of three at home to the Athletics last month.

Athletics LF Yoenis Cespedes sat out the series opener to rest after successfully defending his title in the Home Run Derby, but is expected to start on Saturday.

Notes:

2. In 34 games since June 9, Baltimore’s rotation has posted a 3.17 ERA, lowering the starters’ ERA from 4.61 to 4.07 for the season.
3. The Athletics are 9-3 in their last 12 games decided by two runs or fewer after starting the season 12-17 in such contests.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Orioles –

Hammel has better overall numbers, but Chen just seems to find ways to wins games.

And even though the A’s are 39-16 in their last 55 at home versus Baltimore, I like the O’s in this one.
