The Yankees move to within 1 1/2 games behind the Blue Jays, and with a win on Friday can go two games up on the third-place Orioles, who beat Tampa Bay 2-0 on Wednesday.

Baltimore (37-34) got a solo home run from Nelson Cruz in the eighth inning to take two of three against the Rays. Cruz has collected six hits and three RBIs in his last five games, but his homer on Wednesday was his first in 14 games.

The O’s outscored the Yankees 21-13 and took two of three back on April 7-9, and will send starter Hiroki Kuroda to the mound on Friday to try and repay the favor at home.

The left-handed Kuroda posted his second straight loss after giving up four runs on in a 4 2/3 loss against the A’s on Saturday. He will look to get back on the rails against the Orioles who he already faced back on April 7, allowing just two runs in a 6 1/3 innings in Yankees’ win.

Baltimore will counter with starter Ubaldo Jimenez, who posted his seven straight loss despite allowing just two runs on three hits in six innings against Toronto a week ago Friday.

The right-hander has struggled with control, walking five batters in each of his last two starts and issued as many free passes April 7, when he surrendered our runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings against the Yankees.

Notes

1. New York CF Jacoby Ellsbury answered an 0-for-11 stretch by going 3-for-9 with three runs scored in his last two contests.
2. The Orioles outscored the Yankees 21-13 en route to taking two of three on April 7-9.
3. Winning close encounters is nothing new for the Yankees, who own a major league-best 21-11 mark in games decided by two runs or fewer.

Matt’s Free Prediction: UNDER

Neither starter here has done particularly well, so picking a SU winner is tough.

However, winning close game is nothing new for the Yankees, who own a major league-best 21-11 mark in games decided by two runs or fewer, while the O’s have averaged just over 3 runs per game in their last six.
