Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox Preview

After a terrible start the Red Sox have started to get back on track winning 7 of their last 10 games, but they have lost 2 straight and are still in the basement of the AL East.

In their last games the Orioles beat the Yankees 5-0 while the Red Sox lost to the Oakland A’s 4-2.

This season the Orioles have an O/U record of 9-15 with a run-line W/R record of 18-7 and the Red Sox have an O/U record of 14-9 with a run-line W/L record of 10-14.

The Red Sox are 4-7 at home and the Orioles are 8-5 on the road.

Boston Ace Jon Lester (1-2, 4.65 ERA) takes the mound tonight and he had a great last outing not giving up any earned runs in 7 innings of work in a win over the Red Sox. Wei-Yin Chen (2-0, 2.22 ERA) is on the hill for Baltimore and in his last start he only gave up 1 earned run in 7 innings in a win over the A’s. To say Lester has dominated the Orioles is an understatement, as in 18 career starts facing them the Red Sox have only lost twice and he has a record of 14-0, 7-0 at Fenway, with an ERA of only 2.36.

Wei-Yin Chen has been solid this season and this will be his first ever start against the Red Sox.

The Red Sox rank 4th in the Majors in runs scored, in losing 3 of their last 4 games they have only combined to score 6 runs. That is not good facing a red-hot Baltimore pitching staff that has only allowed 6 runs in their last 5 games. The in that 5 game stretch the Orioles’ bullpen has not allowed a single run.

The Orioles are getting it done as a team with 6 players with at least 10 RBI and 7 players with at least 3 HR.

Wei-Yin Chen has to avoid giving up the long ball and he has to be careful with David Ortiz, who is hitting .391 on the season, Mike Aviles and Cody Ross who have combined for 16 HR this season.

In some betting trends for this AL East match up the Orioles are 1-5 in their last 6 vs. a team with a losing record, 7-0 in their last 7 road games vs. a left-handed starter, and they have an Under record of 4-0 in their last 4 games.

The Red Sox are 1-7 in their last 8 home games, 2-7 in Lester’s last 9 starts, and they have an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.

Jason’s Pick: I think the Orioles have great value facing a somewhat slumping Red Sox team and I think they will win this game behind another strong start from Wei-Yin Chen.
