When the Rockies are at home, they play in high elevation. Yet, they are no longer at lofty heights in the NL West standings like they were earlier in the season. The visiting Braves hope to keep the plummet occurring on Monday night.

Today’s MLB Matchup Stats | Today’s MLB Insider Preview

Colorado (29-32) got off to a very hot start in April and early May behind the strength of superior offense provided by Troy Tulowitzki, Nolan Arenado and Charlie Blackmon. Since then, it’s been pretty bleak for baseball in the Rocky Mountains.

The Rockies won in extra innings against the L.A. Dodgers over the weekend, but that victory snapped a string of eight consecutive losses and 10 losses in their previous 11 games. That kind of performance will drop you out of the division race pretty quick.

Colorado still has admirable offensive numbers – not surprising playing its home games in the juiced-ball atmosphere of Coors Field. Regardless, poor pitching and injuries has derailed the club’s earlier success.

To put it into perspective, the Rockies had a 22-14 record as recently as a month ago.

The Braves (32-29), meanwhile, have done enough to be in a dogfight at the top of the NL East division with the Washington Nationals and the Miami Marlins. Their season hasn’t been perfect; a lack of consistent offense has limited the teams’ ample potential.

But against all odds after a conga-line of injuries to pitchers before the start of the regular season, excellent pitching in Atlanta has kept the team in the equation.

Monday night’s starter Gavin Floyd has definitely been an element in the mix. Alongside Julio Teheran, Aaron Harang and Ervin Santana, Floyd carries a strong 2.80 ERA into his Colorado start. Floyd has looked good, but he’s only pitched 35 innings on the year so far, so a small sample size is a concern.

Contributions with the bats are definitely a work in progress in the Peachtree State, but even Atlanta should be able to cash some runs in homer-happy Denver.

Atlanta is currently getting by with injuries to two key bullpen members in Jordan Walden and Jonny Venters, so it would be a nice bonus for Floyd to go deep in the game.

While the Braves don’t want to let a single game slip with the Nats and Fish breathing down their neck, it seems to be turning out to be the same old story for the Rockies. Since their World Series appearance in 2007, the Rocks show flashes of strong play sandwiched by prolonged stretches of hopelessness.

Colorado sports fans have plenty to get happy about with Peyton Manning and the Broncos, as well as the upstart young Colorado Avalanche of the NHL, but the region’s baseball fans have dealt with a frustrating team over the past few campaigns.

The Rockies have regressed to third in the NL West, 12 games behind the division-leading San Francisco Giants. Shortstop Tulowitzki is still having a season for the ages (he currently carries a crazy 1.126 OPS) but his health is always a worry.

Colorado will need to turn things around fast to avoid another lost season, but with the division-leading Braves in town and with a rookie starter on the hill in Christian Bergman, Monday night does not look promising.
