Arizona

These teams have split the first two games of the series and overall I think that Arizona has to be pretty pleased with their start to the season.

This is their third straight series within the division and so far they have held their own. They haven’t shown that they are among the real contenders but perhaps they are not as far behind the pack as perceived.

To keep at their current level they probably need to hit better and hope that they their pitching is not the flop many are expecting.

The Diamondbacks have a very young starting rotation. Righty Chase Anderson is 27 but this is only his second season in the big leagues which tells you he has taken a while to make his to the ultimate destination.

Last season he was average and his downfall seems to be keeping the ball in the yard. He gave up a homer in his lone start of the season and he needs to work more smartly and deeper into games.

San Diego

The Padres flurry of offseason moves was well documented. Expectations were high coming into the season and like the D-Backs they too have started play in the division.

After a slow start they have gone 4-1 to get over .500. The pitching has been there with an ERA of just 2.74 and the hitting is showing signs of breaking out.

It is a very good sign that their new outfield has gotten off to a good start. When you arrive with high expectations and struggle early sometimes you never break free.

San Diego was wise to take a flyer on Brandon Morrow. When healthy the former Jay has electric stuff and through one outing the brass has to be very pleased. Pitching in that big ballpark he could easily have a big year and this is a good matchup for him.

Arizona’s best hitters bat from the right side and there can be an advantage with unfamiliarity given that he hasn’t pitched much the last few season and has switched leagues.

Look for the Padres to take the rubber match in the series behind Morrow. Very favourable matchup and even though the payoff is not fantastic they are the play.
