The American League All-Stars hold a 40-37-2 all-time advantage in the series, but the NL Stars won’t care about history on Tuesday night as they try to give their World Series representative home field advantage in the Fall Classic.

2009 MLB All Star Game Odds

The oddsmakers have installed the AL as the short -115 favorites on Tuesday night, while the ‘total’ has been set at 9.5 over -115.

Manager Joe Maddon made a number of decisions that were questioned by his peers when it came to selecting the AL All-Star roster, especially when it came to the five Rays that are on his roster. One decision he made that had no arguments was when he handed the ball to ten-game winner Roy Halladay to start the game off. Halladay has an inside track to the Cy Young Award in the American League if he is still playing in the AL after the trade deadline.

But for now, he is representing the AL stars on Tuesday night. There is plenty of speed on the American League roster, as Adam Jones, Curtis Granderson, and Carl Crawford all have amazing base running abilities off of Maddon’s bench. For a manager that is leading the team with the most steals in baseball, expect to see plenty of noise on the base paths in spite of the fact that Yadier Molina is one of the best defensive catchers in the game.

In the other dugout, manager Charlie Manuel will have a host of starting pitchers at his disposal on Tuesday night. Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum will get the starting nod. No one has pitched better in the first half of the season than San Fran’s righty, but having Chad Billingsley, Dan Haren, Josh Johnson, and Johan Santana behind him aren’t bad options either.

The NL probably has its best chance to break the long twelve season skid this year, especially with a starting lineup that has a heck of a lot of power. Albert Pujols, Chase Utley, Ryan Braun, Raul Ibanez, and David Wright all have big fly power, but the bench for the NL All-Stars is also stacked with sluggers like Prince Fielder, Adrian Gonzalez, and Ryan Howard. If there is a question mark for Manuel, it’s who is closing the game. Trevor Hoffman, Heath Bell, and Francisco Rodriguez are his best choices, but those arms don’t match up with Joe Nathan, Jonathan Papelbon, Mariano Rivera, and Brian Fuentes in the American League bullpen.

Will the National League continue its All Star betting blues, or will they snap the AL’s dominance in the exhibition? No matter whether you prefer betting on sides, ‘totals’, runlines, or propositions.
