MLB Power Rankings – July 24th

Dave B’s MLB Power Rankings – July 23

The All Star break is over – now is time to focus on the impending trade deadline only a couple of weeks away. The moves that will be made will most certainly have an impact on the Power Rankings in two weeks. Will the rich get richer?

Will the poor get poorer? Or will some new contenders emerge with their inevitable deadline moves? For now, the usual suspects occupy the top spots on the Rankings with a few sliders and a few risers.

So, without further adieu, let’s take a look at Dave B’s pre-deadline version of the MLB Power Rankings.

1. New York Yankees (1) – Have hit a little bit of a hiccup out west but the Mariners loom – a cure for any team’s ailments. The Western road trips are often difficult but for now the Bronx Bombers are #1 and have the best record in baseball… surprise!

2. Texas Rangers (2) – The Rangers have gone just 6-4 in their last 10 games and are still the second scariest team in baseball – offense and pitching are equally threatening night in and night out.

3. Washington Nationals (3) – The Nats have been so-so going 5-5 in their last 10 games but this team is clearly legit. They lead their division by 3.5 games and have the best record in the National League.

4. Cincinnati Reds (6) – The Reds have gone 8-2 in their last 10 games and have finally caught the Pittsburgh Pirates. Somehow this team has kept up the superb play despite the absence of Joey Votto!

5. Pittsburgh Pirates (4) – are still playing great ball – 7-3 in their last 10 games. How about AJ Burnett?

6. San Francisco Giants (8) – The Giants have also gone 7-3 in their last 10 games and look to be in a dogfight with the Dodgers down the stretch. Their pitching has always been a strength but the offense is starting to do its part too.

7. Atlanta Braves (10) – A little Ben Sheets anyone? He has acted like a big-time trade deadline acquisition and he has been in the minors! With another weapon in the rotation, the Braves should contend for a playoff spot don’t you think?

8. Los Angeles Dodgers (7) – The Dodgers have slipped behind the Giants but are getting healthier! If they are able to land the big starter at the deadline the Dodgers could reasonably climb.

9. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (5) – after a horrid start the Angels are certainly coming around. They have gone just 4-6 in their last 10 games but their best players finally look like their best players. Dan Haren’s return from the DL also helps.

10. Detroit Tigers (17) – have gone 8-2 in their last 10 games and have leapfrogged the White Sox in the Central. This team has woken up and looks to finally be realizing their potential.

11. Baltimore Orioles (12) – The Orioles just keep hanging around! They have gone 6-4 in their last 10 and are still in second in the AL East. Five straight wins and a sweep in Cleveland on the weekend was awfully impressive.

12. Chicago White Sox (9) – have slid to second in the Central on the heels of a 3-7 stretch in their last 10. Hopes are that the bleeding will stop after their brutal road trip.

13. St. Louis Cardinals (13) – The Cards are hanging in the Wild card and have to get better. 5 games over .500 puts them in the Top 15 but they are hanging by a threat based on a .500 record the last couple of weeks. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

14. Oakland Athletics (21) – tied with the Angels but are a staggering seven games over .500 on the heels of a 9-1 stretch. They made the Yankees look average on the weekend – no easy feat! Moneyball lives!

15. Tampa Bay Rays (4) – The Rays have gone just 4-6 in their last 10 and certainly don’t look like the contender that most envisioned. They could move some pitchers at the deadline – if they do watch them fall out of the Top 15.

16. Toronto Blue Jays (18)
17. Cleveland Indians (15)
18. Boston Red Sox (16)
19. New York Mets (11)
20. Miami Marlins (19)
21. Arizona Diamondbacks (20)
22. Philadelphia Phillies (22)
23. Milwaukee Brewers (24)
24. Kansas City Royals (23)
25. San Diego Padres (27)
26. Seattle Mariners (25)
27. Minnesota Twins (26)
28. Chicago Cubs (30)
29. Colorado Rockies (28)
30. Houston Astros (29)
