The prevailing trend in this week’s power rankings: the surprise teams aren’t faltering and the disappointing teams aren’t rebounding. But it’s still early.

(Last week’s rankings in brackets; team records are through Monday, May 10)

1. (2) New York Yankees (21-10): It was only a matter of time before Mark Teixeira awoke from his slumber. Alex Rodriguez seems to have aged over the summer, though.

2. (6) Philadelphia Phillies (20-12): Carlos Ruiz has been a nice surprise. Scary too that Ryan Howard hasn’t even really gotten going yet.

3. (1) Tampa Bay Rays (22-10): Don’t worry about the slight slide in the rankings. Consensus around baseball is that they’ll hold off Boston all season.

4. (3) Minnesota Twins (21-11): Could they improve on last season? The bats remain solid plus Carl Pavano and Francisco Liriano have done wonders for the pitching staff.

5. (4) St. Louis Cardinals (20-12): As if they weren’t dominating the NL Central enough, David Freese and Colby Rasmus are joining the offensive party in a big way.

6. (5) San Francisco Giants (18-12): it’s not something you see mid-season in the majors anymore – but I can’t help but think it would boost the Giants a ton if they traded a starting pitcher for offensive help.

7. (16) Texas Rangers (18-14): You have to credit them for giving C.J. Wilson and Colby Lewis shots in the starting rotation; it’s worked miracles.

8. (8) San Diego Padres (19-12): One person on the team hitting above .267? That has to change if the Padres want to keep up this smoke and mirrors routine.

9. (9) Toronto Blue Jays (19-15): It’s funny to see some of J.P. Ricciardi’s work (Ricky Romero, Brett Cecil) paying off after he’s long gone from Toronto’s front office.

10. (11) Detroit Tigers (18-14): The Max Scherzer experiment is crashing and burning. That makes me skeptical that Detroit has the pitching to remain a contender.

11. (7) New York Mets (17-15): Regressing as expected. Jason Bay and Jose Reyes will get better, yeah, but Mike Pelfrey will get worse.

12. (12) Washington Nationals (18-14): Four games over .500! I love it! Craziest stat of the year is reliever Tyler Clippard tying Roy Halladay and Ubaldo Jimenez for the major-league wins lead with six.

13. (10) Boston Red Sox (17-16): Some more consistency from their starting rotation – which was supposed to be the American League’s best – would go a long way.

14. (14) Cincinnati Reds (17-15): Watching Joey Votto pull the Reds out of a hole with a clutch three-run blast on Sunday made me realize something: the wait is over. This guy is an MVP candidate now.

15. (14) Oakland Athletics (17-15): I’m guessing Dallas Braden’s perfect game was Oakland’s peak. Expect a downhill slide from now on.

16. (20) Los Angeles Angels (15-19): Finally stopped the bleeding with a few wins, but it seems the scab rips open every time Scott Kazmir takes the mound.

17. (25) Los Angeles Dodgers (15-17): If nothing else, they have the best hitter in baseball so far this season in Andre Ethier. He’ll cool off – but not too much. He’s the real deal.

18. (24) Atlanta Braves (14-18): Wasn’t pitching supposed to be their strong suit? Hanson and Hudson are delivering but Lowe has been atrocious and Jurrjens isn’t close to returning from the DL.

19. (22) Milwaukee Brewers (15-17): Are they unlucky? They’ve had plenty of good performances in the lineup and the rotation. Take away the team’s seven blown saves and the Brew Crew could be 22-10.

20. (15) Colorado Rockies (15-17): Ubaldo Jimenez’s ERA: 0.93. The next best on the team among qualifiers: Aaron Cook at 6.03. They need Jorge De La Rosa back soon.

21. (19) Florida Marlins (15-17)
22. (21) Pittsburgh Pirates (14-18)
23. (18) Chicago White Sox (13-19)
24. (23) Chicago Cubs (14-19)
25. (26) Seattle Mariners (12-19)
26. (17) Arizona Diamondbacks (14-19)
27. (28) Cleveland Indians (11-18)
28. (29) Houston Astros (10-21)
29. (30) Baltimore Orioles (9-23)
30. (27) Kansas City Royals (11-21)
