Spring Training is in full swing as the first games of the year get under way this week as it is time to get ready for another season of Major League Baseball.

The following is a brief preview of each of the American League teams and their current odds to win the AL Pennant.

Baltimore Orioles        55-1

The Orioles will have to rely on Jeremy Guthrie, Brad Bergesen, and Kevin Millwood to lead the rotation which is a shaky proposition at best. They have some talent in guys like Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, and Matt Wieters but it probably will be not enough to get them out of the basement in the East.

Boston Red Sox            10-3

With the addition of P John Lackey, the Red Sox starting rotation could be one of the best in the league. Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, and Jacob Ellsbury help make up one of the more formidable lineups in the league. All this talent should allow Boston to challenge the Yankees in the East to the bitter end this season.

Chicago White Sox       12-1

Adding ace Jake Peavy to the starting rotation and along with Mark Buehrle and closer Bobby Jenks gives the Sox one of the better pitching staffs in the AL. Offensively they added Mark Teahan, Omar Vizquel, Andruw Jones, and Juan Pierre making them one of the teams to beat in the highly competitive AL Central.

Cleveland Indians         35-1

The Indians have some offensive power with Grady Sizemore, Asdrubal Cabrera, and Matt LaPorta, but they have been unable to fill the huge hole left by P Cliff Lee’s departure. There are just too many better teams in their division for them to be a factor this year.

Detroit Tigers                14-1

The Tigers have some solid pitching with Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello leading the rotation along with Jose Valverde as their closer. Offensively they are getting old as Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen’s better days are behind them.

Kansas City Royals        45-1

The Royals overall pitching is not bad and they added Josh Fields to go along Billy Butler and David DeJesus to bolster the offensive lineup, but it will probably not be enough to keep them from spending another season in Central division basement.

Los Angeles Angels       17-2

Two major losses for the Angles this past offseason were P John Lackey and 3B Chone Figgens which could definitely impact their chances of winning a fourth straight AL West title. They still have Jered Weaver and Joe Saunders to lead the starting rotation and added the bat of Hideki Matsui to help the offense.

Minnesota Twins            9-1

With AL MVP Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, and Jason Kubel anchoring the offense the Twins should be a force in the Central. While their overall pitching is still suspect they do have a couple of good arms in Francisco Liriano and Scott Baker.

New York Yankees          3-2

Most of the star power for last year’s World Champions is still intact as they are the early odds-on-favorite to win it all again. The only two major losses were Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui. The addition of Nick Johnson as DH should help fill the void of some of these bats.

Oakland Athletics          28-1

Oakland added Ben Sheets to go along with the young arms of Brett Anderson and Trevor Cahill but it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to avoid another last place finish in the West. They did hang on to DH Jack Cust, who failed to sign on with another team as a free agent.

Seattle Mariners              8-1

Expectations are high this year in Seattle after trading for P ace Cliff Lee, who along with Felix Hernandez gives them a powerful one-two punch in the starting rotation.  Adding Figgens from the Angels to go along with Ichiro Suzuki improves an already solid lineup.

Tampa Bay Rays             10-1

Their starting rotation is led by Matt Garza and James Shields and adding closer Rafael Soriano will definitely help. With players like Carl Crawford, Ben Zobrist, and B.J. Upton they have enough talent to remain competitive all season long.

Texas Rangers                 12-1

This team has increased their win total the past three seasons but could be hard pressed to make it four years in a row with Los Angeles and Seattle ahead of them. The addition of P Rich Harden will help as will the healthy return of Josh Hamilton and Michael Young.

Toronto Blue Jays           60-1

Replacing P ace Roy Halladay will be next to impossible but the Jays will most likely rely on Ricky Romero and Shawn Marcum to try and fill the void. Offensively they are led by Vernon Wells, Jose Bautista, and Lyle Overbay but I doubt it will be enough to seriously compete in the East past the All Star break.

Although the Yanks keep popping up as the odds on favorite, I look for thr BoSox to be in the hunt come late September. Their offensive line has the ability to produce and with the extra additions to their rotation, they should be tough contenders.
