August 7th, 2009 Top 10 MLB Power Rankings

Another edition the the 2009 MLB power rankings by Poolside Rants…

MLB Power Rankings (as of 8/07/09)

The betting scene is shifting to pigskin as the dog days of summer wear down.

As some NFL races are about to start, the MLB races are about to start coming down the stretch.

Put down the Super Bowl odds for a second and take a look at our weekly power rankings:

1. Los Angeles Angels (64-42)

For feel good purposes, let’s keep the Angels at the top of this list for now. We all know they won’t be the No. 1 team at the end of the season because they don’t have the pitching to win a World Series but they are hot right now, so they deserve the No. 1 spot.

2. New York Yankees (66-42)

Pitching is still suspect but they are knocking the cover off of the ball. They are also growing more and more accustomed to playing at their stadium, which baseball wagering fans know, is now one of the best hitter’s parks in baseball. With their backs in their own backyard, they will be hard to beat.

3. Philadelphia Phillies (61-45)

The Philadelphia Phillies were big winners at the MLB trade deadline, acquiring Cliff Lee. The Phillies now have the best starting pitching in the National League, maybe save for the San Francisco Giants. We all know they have the hitting too, so they’ll be strong to stick – and maybe win – in October.

4. Boston Red Sox (62-45)

The Red Sox are still one of the best teams in the Majors but their pitching is a little suspect. Can Jon Lester and Josh Beckett carry this team in October? John Smoltz has really let them down and this team does not have as much pitching depth as they originally perceived.

5. Los Angeles Dodgers (67-42)

The Los Angeles Dodgers are fading, although most people have yet to notice. They are playing about .500 baseball since just before the All-Star break and are really struggling to find good pitching. All-Star Chad Billingsley is wearing down while Clayton Kershaw will likely fade at some point too. Neither have had this type of workload before.

6. Texas Rangers (60-47)

The Rangers are battling too many injuries to consider a serious threat. It’s obvious that they are much better than anyone gave them credit for but it’s also obvious that they don’t have the horses to outlast the Angels in the West or the Red Sox/Yankees in the Wild card. Not many betting picks have the Rangers making the playoffs.

7. Chicago Cubs (57-49)

Things are looking up for the Cubs as their hitting is rounding into form. Aramis Ramirez is back and the pitching is coming along slowly with the under-the-radar addition of Tom Gorzelanny. Now if Soriano could just catch on fire…

8. Tampa Bay Rays (60-48)

The Rays are steady but I’m betting management wishes they made a move at the deadline. They have won three straight but are still 2.5 off the pace in the Wild Card. Another addition would have given them that extra push they need.

9. St. Louis Cardinals (59-51)

Matt Holliday is mashing but Albert Pujols is slumping? Wait until both of these guys get going. Believe or not but the Cardinals do have the pitching to win it all again. With Holliday and Pujols, they have the best hitting combo around as well.

10. San Francisco Giants (56-47)

The San Francisco Giants are leading the Wild  Card race and a lot of NL teams are concerned about potentially facing Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain in the first round of the playoffs. They’re holding off the Rockies but good pitching typically outlasts good hitting.

11. Colorado Rockies (59-49)
12. Detroit Tigers (57-50)
13. Chicago White Sox (56-53)
14. Florida Marlins (55-53)
15. Seattle Mariners (56-52)
16. Atlanta Braves (55-54)
17. Minnesota Twins (53-55)
18. Milwaukee Brewers (54-54)
19. Houston Astros (53-55)
20. New York Mets (51-57)
21. Arizona Diamondbacks (50-59)
22. Oakland Athletics (47-61)
23. Cincinnati Reds (46-61)
24. Toronto Blue Jays (51-56)
25. Cleveland Indians (46-62)
26. Baltimore Orioles (45-63)
27. Pittsburgh Pirates (45-63)
28. San Diego Padres (45-65)
29. Kansas City Royals (42-66)
30. Washington Nationals (37-72)

The Dodgers are the hottest team in baseball right now. Gear up for a Boston v LA World Series.

With Cliff Lee added to the rotation, I like the Phillies chances to repeat as World Champion. They now have the most solid team in regards to pitching and batting in the NL and possibly all of baseball.
