MLB Team Preview – Chicago White Sox

If those who bet on MLB take a quick glance at the 2009 Chicago White Sox roster, they’ll realize it’s out with old, in with the new in the South Side. The Pale Hose are only four years removed from a World Series title, but only a few key pieces of that championship squad remain.

Online betting fans know U.S. Cellular Field is the American League’s best launching pad, and it’s been extremely kind to boppers like Paul Konerko, Jermaine Dye and Jim Thome over the years .While all three still remain on the roster, they’re no longer the go-to guys. Konerko has one more year to prove he isn’t finished, Thome, though he can still hit for power, is relegated to DH duty and Dye remains a serviceable and perhaps underrated player.

The new pillars are of the White Sox offense are Carlos Quentin and Alexei Ramirez, both of whom were pivotal parts of the White Sox’s AL Central title run last year and helped many a baseball betting fan at the sportsbook. Who knows how far the Sox could’ve gone had Carlos Quentin not broken his wrist last season? An import from the Diamondbacks, he was on his way to an MVP season, smacking 36 homers despite missing 32 games. While a slight regression is possible, his power is oh-so real. Speaking of power, dynamic Cuban second baseman-turned-shortstop Ramirez could be the next Alfonso Soriano. His bat speed and wheels will make him a fixture near the top of the Chicago order for years to come if he can improve his plate discipline.

Every year, the Chicago rotation looks mediocre on paper, but the Sox always seem to cobble together a starting five and surprise MLB odds players. Last year, prospect John Danks made a major leap; the lefty is a legit talent and may become Chicago’s de-facto ace after Javier Vazquez bolted for free agency. His supporting staff is a mixture of seasoned veterans (Mark Buerhrle) and youngsters hoping to repeat solid performances (Gavin Floyd). Overall, MLB betting fans should expect the Chicago rotation to be more of a weakness than a strength this season; the starters can’t miss bats and pitch in a bandbox.

The bullpen should once again be a strength and could save Chicago’s hide more than once this online betting season. Bobby Jenks has lost some velocity but remains an affective stopper, while dominant Matt Thornton wakes in the wings.

Like virtually every AL Central team, the White Sox seem destined to compete for the division title again. However, given their pitching holes, they’re no longer the frontrunner.

In a divison that has no clear cut favorite, the White Sox chances are as good as anyone elses. As with most teams it will come down to how their pitching holds up and if they can get some decent production from the bull pen come August and September. Not having a strong pitching staff to begin with, makes this even more important for Chicago.
