The Turf – Saturday November 6th Post Time: 6:00 P.M. (EST)
The Turf is a weight for age race open to Thoroughbreds age 3 and up. It is contested on a turf track at a distance of 1 ½ mile with a total prize purse of $3,000,000. There are six automatic bids awarded from wins in a designated Challenge Race for this division and the rest of the field is determined by total points earned over the course of the racing season. The following is a look at a few of the favorites that are expected to run this race.
Winchester
A one-length victory over Paddy O’Prado in the grade I $500,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct. 2 vaulted this horse to the top of the list as one of the favorites for The Turf. Earlier in the year he won the grade I $400,000 Woodford Reserve Manhattan Handicap also at Belmont. The five-year old colt is trained by Christophe Clement.
Workforce
This English-bred horse has been made the early 7-5 favorite for The Turf based upon victories in the Epsom Derby in England and the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in France. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute he is expected to be ridden by Ryan Moore. Workforce has won or placed in four of his five career starts and has amassed $ 4,361,563 in earnings.
Champ Pegasus
This horse started this year with a $45,000 Maiden Special Weight at Santa Anita in April and a $44,000 Allowance Optional Claiming race at Hollywood Park in June. His victory in the grade II $200,000 Del Mar Handicap in August earned him an automatic “Win and You’re In” entry in The Turf as part of the Challenge Cup race series. Champ Pegasus followed this race up with a win in the grade I $250,000 Clement L. Hirsch Memorial Turf Championship Stakes at Hollywood Park.
Behkabad
Trained by Jean Claude Rouget, this French-bred horse is currently the second favorite for The Turf at 9-5. He has won three group races in France this year including the group 1 Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris and the group 2 Qatar Prix Niel. Behkabad has over $1 million in earnings in his two-year career. The Turf would be his first race ever on American soil.
