2009 Breeders Cup Race Preview – The Sprint

The 2009 Breeders’ Cup will be run on November 6th and 7th from Santa Anita Racetrack in Arcadia, Ca. This year’s Cup features 14 races over the two day period with 6 races scheduled for Friday and 8 races slated to run on Saturday.

Here is a preview of the third race on Saturday’s schedule:

The Sprint
Saturday November 7th
Post Time: 3:10 P.M. (EST)

What are you waiting for? Bet NOW! The Sprint is a weight for age stakes race for Thoroughbreds age 3 and up. It is contested on a dirt track at a distance of 6 Furlongs with a total prize purse of $2,000,000. There are four automatic bids awarded from wins in a designated Challenge Race for this division and the rest of the field is determined by total points earned over the course of the racing season.

The current favorites for this race are as follows:

  1. Fatal Bullet: He earned an automatic bid for the Sprint with a win in the Grade 3 Phoenix at Keeneland in early October. He finished second in last year Sprint losing by 2 lengths to Midnight Lute.
  2. Gayego: A win in the October 11th Grade 1 Ancient Title Stakes at Santa Anita gave him his bid for this race. In his previous race he won the Allowance Optional Claiming at Saratoga.
  3. Zensational: Back in early September he earned is automatic bid with a win in the Grade 1 Pat O’Brien at Del Mar. He has not raced since, but is considered to be the odds on favorite to win this race.
  4. Cost of Freedom: With a first place finish in the Ancient Title Stakes at Oak Tree at Santa Anita on September 27th he earned his automatic bid for the Sprint. He only has three starts to his career for a claiming tag which could work against him in this race.
  5. Capt.Candyman Can: He came in second to Fatal Bullet in the Phoenix Stakes, but won the NetJets King Bishop Stakes at Saratoga and the Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Predicted order of finish for the Sprint:

Win– Zensational

Place– Fatal Bullet

Show– Capt. Candyman Can
