The Marathon- Friday November 5th Post Time: 4:10 P.M. (EST)

The Marathon is a Weight for Age race open to Thoroughbreds age 3 and up. It is contested on a dirt track at a distance of 1 ¾ mile with a total prize purse of $500,000. There are four automatic bids awarded from wins in a designated Challenge Race for this division and the rest of the field is determined by total points earned over the course of the racing season. The following is a look at a few of the favorites that are expected to run this race.

A.U Minor

In July of this year this horse registered an upset victory over heavily-favored Alcomo in the 1 ½ mile Greenwood Cup at Philadelphia Park to earn an automatic “Win and you’re in” bid to this year’s Breeders’ Cup Marathon. He went off at 14-1 odds and captured the victory by a neck. His last race was the Grade II Hawthorne Gold Cup on October 3rd where he finished third.

Temple City

This horse’s first stakes race victory was in the grade III $125,000 Cougar II Handicap at Del Mar which just so happened to be a Challenge Cup race, earning him an automatic bid for the Marathon. He went off as a 6-5 second favorite and took control of the race from the start, cruising to a 3 ¼ lengths victory. He finished eighth in the Hawthorne Gold Cup his last time out.

Alcomo

In 2009 this horse won the Greenwood Cup and finished third in the Governor’s Cup Stakes at Remington Park. In June of this year he won the grade II $200,000 Brooklyn Stakes at Belmont Park. He went off as an 8-5 favorite in this year’s Greenwood and finished second, 3 ¼ lengths ahead of Jade’s Revenge. He has six points in the current Marathon standings.

Awesome Gem

This horse is a longtime veteran of Breeders’ Cup racing with a third place finish in the Classic in 2007, a sixth place finish in the Mile in 2008, and a seventh place finish in the Classic last year. So far in 2010 he won the grade I $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap in July and finished fifth in the grade I $250,000 Goodwood Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Predicted winner of the 2010 Marathon: A.U. Minor

I like Giant Oak. He is a strong finisher, and has proved himself by placing third in the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic on a sloppy track at Monmouth. He does show some inconstancy and has not won since May 2009. He is a deep closer and with rain in the forecast, conditions could be favorable.
