2009 Breeders Cup Race Preview – The Filly & Mare Turf

The 2009 Breeders’ Cup will be run on November 6th and 7th from Santa Anita Racetrack in Arcadia, Ca. This year’s Cup features 14 races over the two day period with 6 races scheduled for Friday and 8 races slated to run on Saturday.

The Filly & Mare Turf

The Filly and Mare Turf is a Weight for Age race open to thoroughbred fillies and mares age 3 and up. It is contested on a turf track at a distance of 1 ¼ mile with a total prize purse of $2,000,000. There are five automatic bids awarded from wins in a designated Challenge Race for this division and the rest of the field is determined by total points earned over the course of the racing season. The current favorites for this race are as follows:

The current favorites for this race are as follows:

  1. Dar Re Mi: This Great Britain filly qualified for this race with a win in the Group1 Audi Pretty Polly Stakes at Carragh back in June. Trainer, Josh Gosden may try and run her in the BC Turf in lieu of this race.
  2. Diamondrella: She came from way behind to win the Grade 1 First Lady Stakes at Keeneland, giving her an automatic bid. Back in June, she also won the Just a Game Stakes at Belmont.
  3. Dynaforce: This 6 year old mare earned her automatic bid with a win in the Grade 1 Beverly D at Arlington. This horse has been described as having great tactical speed that will put her in the race from the start.
  4. Lahaleeb: Trained in England, this 3 year old earned her bid with a win in the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes at Woodbine back on October 17th. Her solid closing speed could make her a factor in this race.
  5. Magical Fantasy: She earned her bid with a win in the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon Stakes at Santa Anita. She has won her last four starts including another win at Santa Anita in the Santa Barbara Handicap back in April.
