Santa Anita Free Saturday Picks

National horse racing handicappers will attempt to pad their bankrolls and yours with this weekly column. This week we provide Saturday racing free picks…

Santa Anita Park Race 8 Free Pick

Race-day: 1/17/2009

Race-time: 4:07 pm pst

Saturday is a huge day at Santa Anita Park. Sports betting fans should get their bankrolls ready because there are three graded stakes races on the Santa Anita Park card.

One of the races, the Grade II San Fernando Stakes, happens to be our Saturday pick of the day.

It’s not always easy for online racebook fans to find overlays in stakes races but in the San Fernando on Saturday there happens to be a horse that a lot of online racebook fans had better not forget.

Let’s get to Saturday’s pick of the day!

Santa Anita Park – – Race 8
Grade II San Fernando Stakes
$150,000
For Four Year Olds
1 1/16th miles on Pro-Ride

Muny – – 4/1 fair online betting odds

Some online racebook fans might feel that Muny is strictly a turf horse after his victory in the Oak Tree Derby and then his 5th place finish in the Hollywood Derby.

But that would be a big mistake because this fella broke his maiden on the Del Mar Polytrack. Not only that but he has exceptional speed in a race that’s lacking that quality. He’s the gate to wire threat and should be a serious player in this.

Cherokee Artist – – 4/1 fair online betting odds

The only reason I don’t like Cherokee Artist as much as Muny in this race is because of the expected pace scenario. Cherokee Artist has the ability to close into slow fractions but he’s coming off of his first victory since his maiden score. He does have all sorts of ability and could easily win this, but he might need a race after the lay off. At 4 to 1, though, he’s definitely worth a long look.

Wishful Tomcat – – 6/1 fair online betting odds

I have a feeling that online racebook fans are going to bet down this son of Tactical Cat because he gets Joel Rosario to guide him around the Pro-Ride surface and he’s running first time for Bobby Frankel. He’s a definite player if he’s good and ready but he’s coming off of a slight layoff and he likes to run up front. This guy has never seen speed like Muny’s. Will he cave?

Wagering Strategy

I’m betting Muny to win and place at online odds of 4 to 1 or higher. I will also use in an exacta and trifecta box with Wishful Tomcat and Cherokee Artist.

Good Luck!
