San Diego’s Del Mar racetrack is preparing for the July 21 opening day hoopla that should attract 40,000 or more to the start of their summer session. As usual the season will be filled with extra attractions and discounts.

On the other end of the country Saratoga Race Course in New York will kick off the summer season on July 18. All the summer stakes action will determine which horses will qualify for the Breeders’ Cup showdown in the first week of November at Churchill Downs.

This time of year is also the first good look at the top two-year-olds who are building stakes winnings to qualify for next year’s Triple Crown races.

Del Mar will be thick with celebrities and socialites on opening day when the “One and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest” begins. The biggest attractions for the summer season at Del Mar will be the free concert series to be held every Friday after the races. These concerts are usually headlined by some big names in the business; previous performers include the likes of Ziggy Marley and Billy Idol.

Returning again this year will be “Free and Easy Wednesdays” that will include free Stretch Run seating and discounts on concessions. On July 25 families can enjoy “Family Fun Day”, and “Family Sundays” every week. Families can get in for $6 and wager for as low as $2.

Saratoga race track gets underway a little earlier than Del Mar. The “Annual Open House” on the first day of the season (July 18) includes numerous activities and free handicapping seminars for anyone who would like to learn more about the sport. Opening Day is July 23 with the gates opening at 11:00 AM and a 1:00 PM post time.

Their version of the fancy hat contest will be held on July 25 and all weekend will include a Broadway music festival to open the summer season. Every day until Sept 6 the track is doing a special event for the fans. Look here Track Schedule for a complete guide to the track’s 2010 Summer Season.

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge is in its fourth year and these two tracks will play a role in determining which horses will compete in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup this fall. Del Mar will have the July 30 Cougar II Handicap as a “win and you’re in” ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Marathon, and the July 31 San Diego Mile as a ticket into the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

As well, the John C. Mabee Stakes (Aug 15) gets the winner into the Filly & Mare Turf, the Rancho Bernardo Handicap (Aug 22) gets the winner into the Filly and Mare Sprint, the Pat O’Brian Stakes (Aug 28) gets the winner into the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, the Pacific Classic (Aug 28) gets the winner into the Classic, and the Del Mar Mile and the Del Mar Handicap on August 28 to 29 gets the winner into the Breeders’ Cup Mile and the Turf.

Saratoga will have a couple “win and you’re in” races on their schedule this season.

On August 1 the Ruffian Handicap will get the winner into the Ladies’ Classic, and six days later on August 7 the winner of the Whitney Handicap gets a free entry into the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

For an early look at most of the two-year-old future champions, most juvenile races will be held at the Currah, Ascot, and Woodbine tracks.

Check out the Bodog Sportsbook for all the odds on your favorite stakes races throughout the summer season. Futures and race-day odds will be available as races draw nearer.

Del Mar is by far one of the country’s finest track, and with the weather in San Diego in the summer, it can’t be beat.
