Breeders’ Cup Betting – Breeders’ Cup Mile

The Breeders’ Cup Mile is always one of the toughest races on the card for online racebook fans to handicap.

So many good horses usually enter this race that it’s impossible for Pick-4 and Pick-6 online sportsbook betting fans to not spread in this race. Online racebook fans absolutely have to keep that in mind when looking for a horse that deserves a win wager.

Don’t even think about betting on a horse at odds of less than 5 to 1 in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. It’s just not worth it. Long shots seem to always do well in this race.

Let’s get to it!

Race-day: 10/25/2008 – Santa Anita – – Race 4

Breeders’ Cup Mile
$2,000,000
For Three Year Olds and Up
1 mile on the turf

Whatsthescript – – 5/1 online odds

The hometown boy could do good in this race. Why? Because he will be able to close into some serious fractions and, on paper, he’s every bit as good as the Europeans. Sure, the Euros come into this with great reputations, but Whatsthescript has won four out of five races at the mile distance. He’s also trained by terrific California guy John Sadler. That’s enough, right? He’s been working fantastically for this, gets jockey Garret Gomez and will be overlaid in the betting. That makes him worth a play in my mind.

Raven’s Pass – – 5/1 online odds

Raven’s Pass’s connections are insane if they decide to take on Henrythenavigator and Curlin in the Breeders’ Cup Classic instead of running in this race. Uh…Her Royal Highness Princess Haya (that’s the owner of Raven’s Pass!), this race is for two million bucks! Okay, maybe you don’t need the cash, but your terrific turf horse has no business running against the best that America, and Europe, has to offer when he could go off the favorite in a very prestigious race. Notice I wrote “go off the favorite” and not that Raven’s Pass would automatically win this if he goes. I don’t think he is an automatic. He deserves a ton of respect, more so than anything else in this race, but I’ll have to pass on the 6 to 5 online odds.

Bold Chieftan – – 15/1 fair online odds

Yep. That’s right. He just lost a $175,000 non-graded state-bred stakes race against a field of five as an 80 cent favorite. No, that bit of info in your racing form is not a mirage. But here he is, running in the Breeders’ Cup Mile and here I am saying that he has a punchers’ chance in this, but only a punchers’ chance. Bold Chieftan usually fails in graded races. That means he probably has no chance from a class point-of-view, but the online betting odds are going to be grossly huge on a horse that knows California well and on paper is just as fast as some of the favorites.

Daytona – – 10/1 fair online odds

Isn’t it time for Daytona to start acting like Daytona? He ran off four straight victories in 2007 including one in the Grade I Hollywood Derby at 1 ¼ miles. He is super fast and will get the lead over Thorn Song in this. In fact Thorn Song’s chances of winning should be compromised because Daytona will be winging it out there! I love this guy at what figure to be incredible online odds to win this. Watch him take the lead and go wire to wire at double-digit odds. Yes, at that point all of you can call me a genius!
