NFL Week 5 Totals Analysis

For the second week in a row the over was the best play as eight games went over the total, five stayed under, and there was one push Washington @ Carolina at 37. For the most part the games stayed close to the total line either way as after five weeks the odds makers have fine tuned the numbers.

Here is a brief recap of all the games.

Sunday, Oct. 11th

(Byes: Chicago, Green Bay, New Orleans, San Diego)

Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens
Over/Under 42 || Result 31 UNDER

The Cardiac Cats win another close one 17-14 staying way under the total. At 4-1 with wins over Pittsburgh and Baltimore, it is time to start taking this team seriously.

Cleveland Browns at Buffalo Bills
Over/Under 40.5 || Result 9 UNDER

The way Cleveland’s offense is playing the odds makers may have to take them off the Total betting line.

Washington Redskins at Carolina Panthers
Over/Under 37 || Result 37 PUSH

Carolina comes from behind to not only win their first game of the season, but create the first PUSH of the year for a total’s bet. Jim Zorn’s days in D.C. as head coach are numbered.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Detroit Lions
Over/Under 44 || Result 48 OVER

The Lions continue to keep their games close, but they still do not know how to win. They will be a team to watch as they are getting better.

Dallas Cowboys at Kansas City Chiefs
Over/Under 42.5 || Result 46 OVER

The Cowboys got the win in overtime, but the fact that they struggled to beat the Chiefs tells me this is not a very good team.

Oakland Raiders at New York Giants
Over/Under 40.5 || Result 51 OVER

The Giants take this one over on their own as they completely destroyed the hapless Raiders. My question is, how is JaMarcus Russell still in the starting lineup?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Philadelphia Eagles
Over/Under 42.5 || Result 47 OVER

Donovan McNabb is back as he throws 3 TD’s including two long ones to rookie WR Jeremy Maclin. Every Philly game has gone over so far this season.

Minnesota Vikings at St. Louis Rams
Over/Under 40 || Result 48 OVER

Minnesota continues to roll as they go to 5-0 for the first time since 2003. The Rams have given up over 28 points in each of their last five games.

Atlanta Falcons at San Francisco 49ers
Over/Under 41 || Result 55 OVER

The Falcons put a major hurting on the 49ers defense racking up 447 yards of total offense and 45 points. This could be a major setback for Mike Singletary’s team.

Houston Texans at Arizona Cardinals
Over/Under 48 || Result 49 OVER

The Cardinals blew a 21-0 lead, but hang on at the end with a goal line stand late in the 4th quarter after Houston had 1st and goal from the Arizona 6 yard line.

New England Patriots at Denver Broncos
Over/Under 41.5 || Result 37 UNDER

The student out coaches the teacher as Josh McDaniel’s Broncos move to 5-0. I think we can all agree that this team is for real.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Seattle Seahawks
Over/Under 44 || Result 41 UNDER

Seattle QB Matt Hasselbeck’s return sparks the Seahawks to a 41-0 rout. This game should have easily gone over, but Jacksonville could do absolutely nothing on offense.

Indianapolis Colts at Tennessee Titans
Over/Under 46 || Result 40 UNDER

Peyton Manning should start getting his acceptance speech prepared for a 2nd straight MVP. Nothing against Denver, but at this point, the Colts are the best team in the AFC, if not the league.

Monday, Oct. 12

New York Jets at Miami Dolphins
Over/Under 36.5 || Result 58 OVER

Five touchdowns in the 4th quarter including the game winner by Miami took this game way over the total. The Jets’ defense looked very average down the stretch.

We now have a good feel for which teams can score and which ones simply cannot. Teams like N.Y. Giants, Philadelphia, Minnesota, and Indianapolis are consistently putting up over 30 points every game, while teams like Oakland, Cleveland, St. Louis, and Buffalo cannot seem to find the end zone.

YTD Record: 38-38
