NFL Preseason Predictions- Week 2

As we head into the second week of the 2010 NFL preseason we have now had a look at all 32 NFL teams in action. There are a couple of teams that obviously need the next three weeks to shake of the rust from this past offseason and there are a few teams that look like they are ready to start the regular season right now.

Let’s take a look at some of the more intriguing match ups where a solid performance this week could go a long way toward figuring out the whether these teams are contenders or pretenders.

Thursday Aug. 19, 8 p.m. (ET)
Week 2 Preseason New England @ Atlanta (-2 ½ )
Week 2 Preseason Over/Under Line 37

New England actually made a strong effort to run the ball in its 27-24 win over New Orleans last Thursday night. Tom Brady looked sharp completing 5-of-8 passes for 67 yards in limited action, but Chris Taylor led a rushing attack than ended the night with 125 yards on the ground and three TD’s.

In a 20-10 win over Kansas City last Friday night, Atlanta’s premier running back Michael Turner was solid, running for 29 yards on just four carries. While most of the veterans saw limited action, a few Falcon rookies made a name for themselves by coming up with some big plays. Sixth round pick CB Shann Schillinger’s 29 yard interception and return set up the go ahead touchdown early in the third quarter.

The starters should play most of the first half so we will get a good look at both Brady and Falcon QB Matt Ryan and both of these teams’ passing game. New England’s roster is still a bit deeper than Atlanta’s which should carry the Pat’s in the second half.

The Pick- Patriots and OVER.

Friday Aug 20, 7 p.m. (ET)
Week 2 Preseason Baltimore @ Washington(-2 ½ )
Week 2 Preseason Over/Under Line 38 ½

Baltimore QB Joe Flacco came out firing in Week 1, completing 8-of-12 attempts for 120 yards and a TD in Baltimore’s 17-12 win over Carolina last Thursday. With the addition of WR’s Anquan Boldin and Donte’ Stallworth to an already stacked receiving corps, the Ravens appear to be recommitted to featuring their passing game this season.

Donovan McNabb’s debut with his new team was considered a success after the 12 year veteran quarterback led the Redskins on a nifty 11 play 80 yard drive that resulted in a four yard TD pass to Anthony Armstrong early in the first quarter. Washington went onto to beat Buffalo 42-17.

The Ravens will be a good test for McNabb to see how well he can move his team against a quality defense. The Redskins have improved but Baltimore is still the better team.

The Pick-Ravens and UNDER.

Sunday Aug 22, 8 p.m. (ET)
Week 2 Preseason Minnesota @ San Francisco (-3 )
Week 2 Preseason Over/Under Line 34 ½

All the talk in Minnesota this week has been about the special envoy of players that went down to Mississippi to convince veteran quarterback Brett Favre to return for one more shot at Super Bowl glory. Backup QB Sage Rosenfels actually looked pretty good in the Vikings 28-7 win over St. Louis last Saturday, but obviously this team wants Favre behind center when they start shooting for real.

San Francisco looked pretty good in its 37-17 win over Indianapolis but only after Colt’s QB Peyton Manning took a seat. Manning played two series and led the team to a touchdown and a field goal before calling it a night.

With its leader back in the fold, Minnesota is now ready to make another run at a title. While he will see little or no action in this game, having Favre back should be enough inspiration for the rest of the team to win this game.

The Pick- Vikings and OVER.
