Week 17 NFL Totals Betting Analysis

Week 17 Betting Analysis

Make it three straight weeks that the total bet was split right down the middle as the odds makers did a great job setting the lines on a very difficult week to handicap.

Eight games stayed under the total with the lowest score coming in the Philadelphia @ Dallas game with the Cowboys pitching the 24-0 shutout.

Before this game the Eagles had been averaging almost 28 points a game. In the eight games that went over the highest total was in the Kansas City @ Denver game with 68 as the Chiefs went over the 38 point line on their own, scoring 44 points on the Broncos.

Here is a brief recap of all the games.

Sunday, Jan. 3

Indianapolis Colts at Buffalo Bills
Over/Under 38 Result 37 UNDER

Peyton Manning only played three series for the Colts, allowing the Bills to end their season on a high note with a big 30-7 win in a blinding snowstorm.

New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers
Over/Under 41 Result 33 UNDER

New Orleans is the only team to enter the playoffs as the number one seed that lost their final three games as QB Mark Brunell got the start for Drew Brees.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Cleveland Browns
Over/Under 38.5 Result 40 OVER

Cleveland ended the season with four straight wins but it still will probably not be enough for head coach Eric Mangini to save his job.

Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys
Over/Under 47.5 Result 24 UNDER

Dallas completely manhandled Philadelphia churning up 179 yards on the ground on offense and shutting down Donovan McNabb on defense. Next week they will get a chance to do it all over again in a wildcard playoff game.

Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions
Over/Under 45 Result 60 OVER

While it took 17 games, Chicago QB Jake Cutler finally put it all together throwing for 276 yards and four TD’s with zero interceptions to give Bear’s fans hope for next season.

New England Patriots at Houston Texans
Over/Under 46 Result 61 OVER

New England not only lost the game, they lost WR Wes Welker for the postseason after he tore up his knee in the first quarter. The Texans earned their first winning season in franchise history, but still missed the playoffs.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Miami Dolphins
Over/Under 46.5 Result 54 OVER

Pittsburgh held off a late Miami rally to get the win, but it was too little to late as they will miss the postseason after winning the Super Bowl last season.

New York Giants at Minnesota Vikings
Over/Under 48 Result 51 OVER

Minnesota slid back into the number two seed with the win and Philadelphia’s loss. The Giant were outscored 85-16 in their final two games.

Cincinnati Bengals at New York Jets
Over/Under 36 Result 37 OVER

New York’s defense smothered Cincinnati, holding them to 72 yards of total offense including zero yards of net passing. (Trust me, that figure is not a misprint.)

San Francisco 49ers at St. Louis Rams
Over/Under 40.5 Result 34 UNDER

The combination of RB Frank Gore, TE Vernon Davis, and WR Michael Crabtree paint a pretty bright future for San Francisco as they help get the win, moving the 49ers to 8-8 for the season.

Atlanta Falcons at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Over/Under 43.5 Result 30 UNDER

Atlanta’s win over Tampa moved their record to 9-7 for the year, giving them back to back winning seasons for the first time in franchise history.

Green Bay Packers at Arizona Cardinals
Over/Under 43.5 Result 40 UNDER

With Arizona QB Kurt Warner on the sidelines, Green Bay rolled to a 33-7 win in a preview of next week’s wildcard match-up between these two teams.

Kansas City Chiefs at Denver Broncos
Over/Under 38 Result 68 OVER

Kansas City RB Jamaal Charles ran for 259 yards and scored 2 TD’s to help hand Denver their eighth loss in their last 10 games, officially eliminating them from the playoffs.

Baltimore Ravens at Oakland Raiders
Over/Under 38 Result 34 UNDER

Baltimore kept the ball on the ground racking up 240 rushing yards to grind out a win over the Raiders, clinching a wildcard spot in the playoffs.

Washington Redskins at San Diego Chargers
Over/Under 39.5 Result 43 OVER

With mostly second stringers in the game, San Diego rallied from four points down to beat Washington for their 11th straight win. This was Jim Zorn’s last game as head coach of the Redskins.

Tennessee Titans at Seattle Seahawks
Over/Under 44 Result 30 UNDER

Tennessee RB Chris Johnson broke Marshall Faulk’s single season record for yards from scrimmage with 2,509 and ended up with 2006 rushing yards for the year.

As the regular season comes to a close there will be three rematches of week 17 games next week in the first round of the playoffs; Philadelphia @ Dallas, Green Bay @ Arizona, and N.Y. Jets @ Cincinnati. The fourth game has Baltimore traveling to New England to take on the Patriots.

Final Regular Season Record: 127-126
