After back to back 9-7 seasons in 2007 and 2008, Tampa Bay believed it was time for a change and decided to fire long time head coach John Gruden. In his place the team promoted Defensive Back Coach Raheem Morris to the top spot. In his first season the Buccaneers fell to 3-13, but he still received a vote of confidence and returns for a second season in 2010.

One thing Tampa may have found last season is a quarterback for the future. As a rookie, Josh Freeman started nine games for the Buccaneers and while his statistics were nothing to write home about, he did show some flashes of ability that were clearly seen as signs of better things to come.

Their leading receiver last season was TE Kellen Winslow, who finally was healthy enough to play an entire season.

He ended the year with 77 receptions for 884 yards. Their second leading receiver Antonio Bryant is gone but they are counting on second round draft pick Arrelious Benn and fourth rounder Mike Williams to make an immediate impact on this offense.

The running game will be led by Cadillac Williams and Derrek Ward who combined for over 1,200 yards rushing last season. The Bucs offense finished 2009 ranked 28th overall; 24th in passing and 23rd running the ball.

With all the youth in this lineup do not expect any dramatic improvement in these numbers for 2010, but they are starting to add some playmakers that can make a difference a few seasons down the road.

One area where Tampa should be better in 2010 is on defense. Last year the Bucs were ranked 27th overall; dead last against the run but 10th against the pass.

With the addition of DT’s Gerald McCoy, the third overall pick in the draft and second round pick Brian Price, the defensive line should be much improved. Overall this unit has some good young talent that will be able to keep the Buccaneers more competitive than they were last season.

Last season Tampa was 1-7 straight up at home and 2-6 on the road. It went 1-5 in the division with its only win coming against New Orleans in Week 16. Against the spread the Bucs were 6-10 overall; 1-7 at home and 5-3 on the road.

Tampa Bay will need a lot of things to come together quickly if it is to have any chance of seriously competing in the NFC South. In all likelihood they will win a few more games than last season, but still end up in the division’s basement for the second year in a row.

2010 Prediction: 4th in the NFC South
Win Total: UNDER
